ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTVF) A Korean War Veteran Ceremony was held on Friday in Anchorage. In attendance were Senator Dan Sullivan and Governor Mike Dunleavy, as well as South Korea's U.S. Ambassador, Cho Yoon-je.
Eleven Korean War veterans were honored and given the Korean Ambassador for Peace Medal. As a sign of unity, both the U.S. and Korean National Anthems were sung at the ceremony.
Senator Sullivan and Ambassador Yoon-je spoke at the event.
"For Americans, the Korean War has been misnamed," said Sullivan. "I never liked the phrase 'the forgotten war', it downplays the sacrifice and nobility and meaning of this brutal conflict. This memorial is a somber and haunting reminder of the American sacrifices made in defending South Korea from a communist takeover."
"My visit to Alaska and the Delaney Park here today..." began Yoon-je “...is part of this effort to reach out and personally deliver my country's gratitude to those who risked their lives in service to safeguard Korea's freedom and independence."
