Alaska Railroad Opens Mainline to Train Traffic

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The rail line between Fairbanks and Anchorage will reopen the mainline track with freight service starting January 18th in the evening.

The Aurora Winter Train will operate its regularly scheduled weekend service, beginning Saturday morning.

This comes after a single car came off the tracks tuesday and continued to be dragged. Several thousand ties where damaged, as well as a bridge.

According to the Alaska Railroad Corporation the damage was caused by the derailed car's truck – the apparatus underneath a railcar that holds the axles and wheels.

Trains will operate under slower speeds than normal, causing some delays.
