FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Mary Siah rec center is safe from demolition, at least for now.
On Thursday night, the Borough Assembly voted to fund the rec center for the following year.
Borough officials say this allows them to gather more information on the building and maintenance needed.
It also gives residents a chance to figure out another solution, to possibly save the Mary Siah.
Stuart Morse, who often takes his granddaughter to the pool, talked about the rec center's importance.
"Having the Hamme pool is a great back-up, but this pool serves a different purpose then Hamme too, it's a little warmer pool, it's more of a therapy pool for older folks like myself coming down here doing swim therapy but certainly for teaching the kids to swim, having swimming lessons, it's been pretty important to the community," said Morse.
The Department of Public Works will now work with contractors to conduct a seismic survey on the building, and
the results will determine the future for the Mary Siah rec center.
