Fairbanks Borough Assembly to Continue Discussion on Mary Siah

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Borough Assembly will continue discussion tomorrow on the future of the Mary Siah building.
At Thursday's regular meeting, an ordinance amending the 2017 and 2018 budget will include funding demolition of the almost seventy year old recreation center.
Mayor Kassel says that the Mary Siah building is not the only borough property that needs repair.
He adds that if all necessary funds were allocated to save the building, it could come at the cost of two other highly attended facilities.

Mayor Karl Kassel; Fairbanks North Star Borough>>"There's one proposal out there to take all of these ordinance that 's up this week for a vote and instead of funding for six projects roll all that into Mary Siah, instead. Okay, but, there's money for Westcott Pool in there for more than a million dollars, and we're planning on putting money into Hamme, next year in the 7 figure range to keep them functioning, because if we don't do that, we're going to have to close one or both of those pools. We'll still have Mary Siah running, but we'll have to close one of them, because we won't have the money to deal with the repair work."
