Avalanche Closes Richardson Highway Near Thompson Pass

By  |

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - An avalanche at mile 39 on the Richardson Highway has caused a closure from mile 12 to 55.
The avalanche occurred early this morning around 3-30.
The snow has been estimated to be 20 feet deep and 200 feet long.
The past 24 hours has produced perfect avalanche conditions in the Valdez area and Copper River Basin, with bouts of heavy rain and snow, as well as temperatures ranging from the high 20's to mid 30's.
Though the National Weather Service has predicted that heavy snow will taper off by this afternoon, Valdez has already received more than 12 inches, and Thompson Pass is expected to get as much as 45 inches.
It remains unclear when the Richardson will reopen, as the weather is preventing Department of Transportation Crews from clearing the debris.
