Monte was born in Alaska before it was a state. His parents moved to the Lower 48 when he was a year old and it took him 36 years to get back.

Monte graduated from high school in Kansas and worked as a Sentry dog handler in the Air Force. He started in radio in 1971, doing news in Texas and Idaho before coming to Fairbanks in 1984, where he worked for KIAK for 16 years.

He started his news career in 2001, and joined the Newscenter 11 team in June 2004.
