West Valley hockey team wins overtime thriller against Chugiak

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Volleyball wasn't the only sport the West Valley Wolfpack had success in last night, their hockey team defeated the visiting Chugiak Mustangs 5-4 in an Overtime thriller at the Patty Center.
The Mustangs held on to a 4-3 lead in the final period, but Anton Ruppert was able to send the game into overtime thanks to a goal with just 47 seconds left on the clock.
Coleman Baxter then scored in Overtime to give the Wolfpack a 5-4 victory over their non-conference opponents.
Baxter, Ruppert, Branden Ray, Tyler Lorring, and Kaiden Hafele were all able to find the back of the net for the Wolfpack.
West Valley was able to outshoot the Mustangs 53-23 on the night to improve to 2-0 so far this year.
The Monroe Catholic Rams were also in action last night.
They kicked off their season with a 6-1 win over the Soldotna Stars in the Peninsula Ice Challenge.
The defending Greatland Conference champs got two goals apeice from Antonio Szumigala and Landon Bartels.
Caleb Sanborn and Evan Fritze both chipped in one for the Rams, who will continue tournament play through the weekend.
Chugiak will be in town all weekend, they will play the North Pole Patriots tonight and the Lathrop Malemutes tomorrow.
