FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska Nanook Women's Basketball team will be heading down to Anchorage this weekend to compete in the Seawolves Hoops Classic.
The Nanooks will be coming into the classic with a 1-1 record after splitting their season-opening series last weekend against the University of Hawaii-Hilo.
Nooks Guard Lexi Carpenter was named the Female RAVN Alaska Nanook of the week for her efforts against the Vulcans last weekend.
She scored 12 points in Friday Night's game and 19 points on Saturday night, leading the team in both games.
She is now averaging 15 and a half points per game, ranking her sixth in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
Her five three pointers ties her for third in the conference, while she ranks second in steals with 3 per game.
Ashlie Blackburn also scored double-digit points last weekend, scoring 11 points in Friday's game.
She led the team in rebounds with 9 in her first game for the Nooks.
They began the classic by taking on Western State Colorado today, where they suffered a 49-41 defeat.
We will have more on that tomorrow for the weekend edition of the Fairbanks Evening News.
They will take on Holy Names tomorrow at 3pm.
Our men's basketball team will get to relax through the weekend, but will be back in action on Monday night for their first home game of the season against Holy Names at the Patty Center.
