FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Since the vast majority of the athletes and the Athletic Department at UAF are taking some time off for Christmas, this week for Nanook Corner we are going to recap how our teams are doing this year, and show you where they rank in their respective conferences.
"When you talk about UAF Sports, the conversation usually starts and ends with Hockey. The Nookook hockey team is currently sitting at 7-11-2 overall this year. They are currently in 8th place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association with a 5-8-1-1 conference record. They have 17 conference pounts and are just one point behind both Bemidji State and Alabama Hunstville, who are tied for 6th. The Nanooks have already secured the Governor's Cup this year to once again prove they are the superior hockey team in the State. Both our Basketball teams are hitting their strides in their seasons. The Men's Team is currently 4-5 overall and 2-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. They are currently tied for second place in the GNAC with Western Oregon and UAA. The Women's team is currently 3-3 overall. However they are also 0-3 in conference play and are last in the GNAC. Our swimming team is currently 2-2 and ranked 11th in the PCSC with 362 points. Our skiing team hasn't officially hit the trails since they dropped the Nordic Cup to UAA back on November 19th. The Skiers have been staying busy by racing in events like the Town series and the Besh Cup. They will officially hit trails again when they compete in the US Cross Country National Championships on January 3rd in Anchorage. The most prestigious program at the University is continuing to shine. The UAF Rifle team is currently undefeated this year with a 5-0 record thanks to victories over Patriot Rifle Conference foes Ohio State, Air Force, UTEP, and the University of Nevada. They are currently ranked fifth in the entire nation. They will look to remain unbeaten when they return to the range on January 8th in Jacksonville Alabama. 2018 is looking to be a promising year for UAF Athletics."
