First day of State Skiing Championships sees West Valley Skiers finish in runner up spots

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Weekend-long State Skiing Championships started out on Birch Hill yesterday.
The festivities started with the Girls five-Kilometer Freestyle and the Boys 7 and a half Kilometer freestyle.
In the girls race, defending state champion from West Anchorage Molly Gellert won 5-K in 14 minutes and 52 seconds.
West Valley's Kendall Kramer, who was recently named the Gatorade Alaska Cross Country Runner of the year, took second place with a 15 minute time, finishing just eight seconds behind Gellert.
Service's Garvee Tobin took third place in 15 minutes and 35 seconds.
The Boys race also saw a defending champion stand tall when Service's Gus Schumacher won it in 19 minutes and 27 seconds.
West Valley's Ti Donaldson took second place 20 seconds later, while West Anchorage's Luke Jager took the Bronze Medal spot with a 20 minute, 21 second time.
In the team standings for both the Girls and Boys West Anchorage is in first place while West Valley is in second.
Chugiak is in third in the Girl's standings while Service holds third place for the boys.
The races will continue today and will wrap up on Saturday.
