Alaska high school sports programs reclassified to DI, DII, DIII: football season kicks off

By  |

The Alaska School Activities Association has made a small tweak to their classification system.
Instead of Large, Medium, and Small Schools, it is now Division 1, Division 2, and Division 3.
That will be in effect for all sports except for Basketball who will still be 1A to 4A.
Now, Football season finally starts back up here in the Interior with our first set of games this weekend.

We are in a fairly unique situation for this weekend as all of our teams are either playing tonight or are away from home.
Tonight's action will see brand new Head Coach Marcus Cogley and his Monroe Catholic Rams host the Redington Huskies at the Big Dipper Football field tonight.
This battle of Non-Conference Division 3 schools will see the Rams look to give their new head coach his first win, while the Huskies will be looking for their first win as a program after going Ofer last year.
Also tonight will see a rematch from a year ago as the Defending Divison 3 state champion Eielson Ravens will host the Division 1 West Valley Wolfpack.
The Ravens will be looking to avenge their loss to the Wolfpack last year.
That was the only defeat that Eielson Suffered on their way to their third state title in a row.
The Wolfpack will be looking to set the tone for their season as they hope to improve on their 4-4 record from last year.
The North Pole Patriots will be taking on the Palmer Moose down in Palmer tonight and the Lathrop Malemutes will begin their tough stretch of season opening games tomorrow when they start their season against the Dimond Lynx.
All of our interior squads will be looking to start their season on a high-note this weekend.
Good luck to all our players and coaches.
