FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska Nanooks were able to avenge their loss from Friday night with a 4-1 win over the Northern Michigan Wildcats on Saturday.
The first period of Saturday's game was completely scoreless but the Nooks were able to open up the scoring in the second period with back-to-back goals.
After another scoring drought, Northern Michigan was able to find the back of the net with about 2 minutes left in the game.
The Wildcats then decided to pull their goalie to earn the man advantage for the final two minutes.
This proved to be a mistake as the Nooks were able to earn two empty net goals to secure the 4-1 win.
Tristan Thompson and Max Newton scored for the Nooks in the opening period while Justin Young and Kylar Hope chipped in the empty netters.
Newton earned himself a multi-point night with an assist.
Chad Staley, Zach Frye, Nick Hinz, and Steven Jandric all dished out an assist as well.
That was Jandric's 10th assist of the season, he is the only Nanook with Double-Digit assists this year.
The Freshman Phenom is the leading scorer on the team so far this year with 11 points.
Niko DellaMaggiore earned the start in goal on Saturday.
He nearly earned a shutout, stopping 20 of the 21 shots fired at him to secure the win.
The Victory brings the Nooks up to 4-8-1 overall and 2-5-1-1 in WCHA play.
The Nooks are now seventh place in the WCHA, one point behind the now 6th place UAA Seawolves.
The Nanooks will be back at home this weekend against Michigan Tech on Friday and Saturday.
Erik Largen; Assistant Coach>>: "I thought the guys played very well. I thought from the opening drop from the puck that there was a different level of competitiveness tonight. I thought we really limited their chances. They only had some on the power play. And the goaltender to the left of me was outstanding. It was a good team effort; guys really bought in and played for each other tonight. And It was exciting to see and we got rewarded with three points."
Niko DellaMaggiore; Goaltender>>: "I was pretty nervous at the beginning. It was nice to have the defense in front of me. They kinda helped me settle in a little bit. The first period was definitely a lot easier than I expected it to be based off how yesterday went. So it was nice that they helped out tremendously."
Chad Staley; Center>>: "They're a good team, they have guys that can score. So limiting the Grade-A chances they get was huge for us. And then when they did get them Niko was there to stop it. So."
