Organization urges earthquake awareness

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Earthquakes can be destructive and deadly, but most people are not prepared for a seriously destructive quake.

The1964 magnitude 9.2 earthquake in Anchorage made history books; but 30 years earlier, in 1937, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit near the location of what is now Eielson Air Force Base.
With that kind of seismic potential, it is very possible for another large magnitude earthquake to strike.
The 'Great American Shake Out' originated in California in 2008, and has since spread all over the world.
On October 19th, at 10-19 in the morning, the Great Alaskan Shake Out will take place.
Emergency Management Technician for the Department of Emergency Operations, Kate Janoski told us what the Shake Out is.

Kate Janoski; Emergency Management Technician >> "Alaskans are encouraged to go online to SHAKEOUT.ORG and register themselves, their family, or their businesses to pledge to participate on October 19th at 10:19, whatever earthquake drills they have."
