FAIRBANKS, Alaska - An event at the Noel Wien Library this week aimed to open students' eyes to career possibilities beyond traditional college degrees.
The Community Trade Exposition took place Wednesday afternoon.
It was a collaboration between local homeschooling programs, labor groups, and the University of Alaska Fairbanks' 'Career and Technical College'.
Throughout the afternoon, representatives from the groups gave presentations and answered students' questions about the education, training, and benefits involved with working in the trades.
Organizer Ryan Tilbury says it's important for students to be aware of their options, particularly with new developments that will require substantial numbers of vocational workers in years to come.
Ryan Tilbury; Counselor - Yukon-Kuskokwim School District>>"They're talking about their benefits and their retirement, and what they need to do to be successful in the trades. From the interview, to the application, to, you know, keeping - not drinking, using drugs. You know, a lot of it is just having everyone here together to convey the same message and talk about the opportunities that are going to be available here in Alaska. Especially coming up with the military growth here in the Interior, there are going to be a lot of jobs, they need a lot of qualified applicants."
