Mega-accident closes westbound Johansen Expressway for hours

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - An accident involving more than a dozen cars blocked the westbound lanes of the Johansen Expressway this afternoon near its intersection with University Avenue.
But fortunately, initial reports say there were no serious injuries.
The accident took place near the bridge over Noyes Slough at the west end of the expressway, where vehicles slow down as they approach the intersection with University Avenue.
Most of the cars involved in the accident appear to have slid into each other at relatively low speed, resulting in a wall of impacted vehicles that was difficult for oncoming traffic to avoid.
It's not yet clear what initially caused the accident; but Department of Transportation spokeswoman, Meadow Bailey, said a road crew had laid down sand and gravel soon before the crash occurred.
Initial reports from the scene made no mention of serious injuries, though some drivers were pinned in their vehicles.
