FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Tony Award winning musical, "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" will open this Friday, January 5th.
Although the musical comedy focuses on six adolescents competing in the Putnam Valley Middle School Spelling Bee, the age of the cast ranges from 17 years old to members in their 50's and 60's.
Director, Michael Shaeffer, told us about how members of the audience will have a chance to get up on stage and show their spelling prowess.
Michael Shaeffer; Director >> "Each night, the way that the play is written, is we incorporate four people from the audience, from the community. And if people out there are good spellers, or even creative spellers, and you want to be on stage, you don't need any rehearsal experience or acting experience. You just play yourself on stage, and you're given a word, and no matter how ridiculously easy or ridiculously hard, these people from the audience are asked to have a definition of the word provided or them and then have a word used in a sentence. And if they do well, they advance into the Bee, and if not, we have a pleasant little good-bye song for them."
