Mayor's appointment sparks Gas Board drama

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Later in the Borough Assembly meeting, Patrice Lee's seat on the Interior Gas Utility board became the subject of intense discussion.
The seat was already vacant because of Aaron Lojewski's assembly win, and Lee was excited about the prospect of stepping in before her term officially starts in January.
But Borough Mayor Karl Kassel appointed I-G-U volunteer consultant Bob Shefchik to fill the seat until then.
Despite several of Lee's supporters saying they felt it would be more appropriate for her to fill the seat, the assembly voted 5 to 4 to support Shefchik's appointment.
Although Lee was disappointed in that decision, she says she'll still work to get up to speed on I-G-U business before her term begins.
