Changes are coming to Geist/University road construction

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The rain may have halted some weekend plans, but it hasn't stopped the road construction.
Geist Road, University Avenue, and the Johanson Expressway have been closed for almost a month, but progress has been made.
With most of the underground and sidewalk work done, Caitlin Frye with the Alaska Department of Transportation talked about a change that will be happening soon.
"One thing that is important to keep in mind is that traffic patterns are going to be changing this week on University. So there's one lane in each direction going North/South, both lanes are going to shift to the West, which is the Geist Road side, so that they can begin doing work on the East side of University." Frye said.
The construction is expected to last until mid-August.
"That is a hard deadline. We want to get that intersection open by the time school starts." Frye said.
Construction will continue on Farmers Loop at Ballaine, the Chena Ridge Cripple Creek Culvert Replacement, and the Phillips Field Road project. Improvements on Chena Hot Springs Road at mile post 20 will begin later on this month. DOT is also preparing to begin work on the Elliott Highway from mile post 0-12.
