A warning on Wednesday about a bear in the Aurora neighborhood now looks to have been in error.

Authorities sent out an alert Wednesday afternoon, notifying community members that a report had come in of a black bear sighting in the Aurora subdivision near College Road, and that a wildlife trooper was investigating.

Bear sightings near Fairbanks are comparatively rare, especially in developed neighborhoods such as Aurora, where wild animals have to trek through populated areas on all sides.

If the bear sighting had been substantiated, it would have been a serious concern, with Anne Wien Elementary School and Randy Smith Middle School both directly bordering the neighborhood.

But the wildlife troopers search didn't turn up any sign of the bear, and officials now say the sighting was likely a case of mistaken identification.
