FAIRBANKS, Alaska - An Anchorage-based soldier died yesterday while on duty in Afghanistan.
U-S Army Alaska announced today that 24-year-old Staff Sergeant David Thomas Brabander succumbed to injuries he suffered in a non-combat vehicle accident in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan.
Brabander deployed in September along with the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, based out of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
He had been with the Army for five years.
Governor Bill Walker ordered Alaska's flag lowered to half-staff through Friday in Brabander's honor.
The governor encouraged Alaskans to support Brabander's friends and family in the wake of his death.
