The 2016-2017 school year set a new record for four-year graduation rates for the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District.
Of the 948 students in the district's four-year cohort, 730 graduated, resulting in a 77 percent graduation rate, which is the district's highest reported graduation rate to date.
The 2016-2017 school year also marked the highest reported graduation rate for Alaska Native and American Indian students.
Out of 154 students, 99 graduated.
The 64.3 percent graduation rate is an increase of 4.9 percent over the previous year, and a 12.9 percent increase over the 2011 rate of 51.4 percent.
Alaska Native Education Director, Yatibaey Evans discusses some of the changes made that helped increase the graduation rate for Alaska Native students.
"One of the biggest changes that I've seen within Alaska Native Education is really a precise way of reaching students through clear support in a holistic manner that includes cultural connections with students, and making sure that the academic tutoring occurs, as well as, support within a classroom is in a culturally responsive manner."
