CHRISTMAS IN ICE – Final Day Tuesday, January 9

Greetings from Christmas In Ice. We are excited about the upcoming 11th annual Christmas In Ice event, which takes place next to Santa Claus House in North Pole, Alaska from December 2, 2017 to January 9, 2018. Our goal is to provide outdoor activities and family entertainment when the winter’s cold normally keeps us indoors. We have a wonderful Elf’s Icy Playground with a couple 100+ foot tandum slides to race down, twirlers, kiddie slides and a full-size maze. We even provide sleds for everyone to use on the slides in keeping with the Christmas spirit.
A hardy group of volunteers, including many local military personnel, spend hours harvesting ice with chain saws from a local pond for this event. Our event begins with the Single Block ice carving competition in which one person has approximately 25 hours to carve a magnificent sculpture from 53 CF of ice. A two-person team multi-block competition follows with the carvers using approximately 160 CF of ice to carve two story high sculptures over a 4 day period. The carvings must have a Christmas or family theme. Both events are juried by a group of guest judges using the National Ice Carver’s Association (NICA) standards of ice sculpture scoring and the winners are rewarded handsomely. We have new sculptures carved throughout our month-long event including demonstrations to schools and other groups.
We provide many special days like the BP Picnic Day, with free admission to the park and hot dogs and cocoa for all, and Military Appreciation Day with free admission for visitors with a Military ID. We also give a complimentary ticket to all children in the Fairbanks North Star Borough, Nenana, and Delta School Districts, sixth grade and younger, for free entrance when accompanied by a paying adult; and all children 5 and under are free. Christmas Day come sit with Santa on an elegantly carved ice throne for free and have relatives tune into you on our “Santa Cam”, live webcam.
