Lathrop and Colony cruise in first Region VI track meet

FAIRBANKS-At the end of Saturday's Region 6 track meet. Colony and Lathrop came out on top.

The Colony Knights girls track team won with 230 points. Lathrop was second with 155 and West Valley finished third out of the 10 team field.

On the boys side the Lathrop Malemutes won with 230 points. Colony was second with 145 and West Valley had 103 out of 12 teams.

The Malemutes did damage in throwing. Joe Dickinson won the boys discuss, Damian Coger won shotput, and To'a Levia won girls shotput.

First track and field of year features UAF commit, Lathrop sophmore wins

FAIRBANKS-This afternoon at Lathrop high school was the first all schools track and field meet of the 2014 season. More than 800 student athletes from the Interior and beyond entered into competition for this first meet.

A lot more kids and events going on than last year when it was just abysmal. It was a little brisk today but the kids were able to do some discus and the shot put among other field events.

Hutchison's Justice Lunceford jumped 27'9" and West Valley's David Swenson had a mark of 31'9" in the boys triple jump event.

Lathrop baseball team starts season with big win on the road

ANCHORAGE-Well track high school track has officially started as well as soccer. Softball starts next week but the high school baseball season is back. Last night an Interior team won their season opener.

The Lathrop Malemutes won by double digits 12-2 over Service in the five inning non-conference game. It was Lathrop's first game outside.

The Mutes played on the same day they traveled but it didn't affect the pitchers. Terrell Ford allowed one hit in three innnigs and Mike VanMuelken allowed a solo hit in the last two innings.

South sweeps West Valley Soccer, Hutch to have season openers

ANCHORAGE-Last night in high school soccer West Valley had a pair of that didn't go too well. South Anchorage swept the Wolfpack.

In the girls game South won 7-1. Audie Wade scored prevented the Wolfpack pack from being shutout. Samantha Clemens had the assist.

The West Valley Wolfpack boys were shut out by the defending state champion Wolverines in a 3-0 loss.

Both West Valley teams play Service tonight and wrap up their three game roadie on Saturday against Chugiak.

Local athletes place in top five at NYO

ANCHORAGE-Some local athletes did well in the Native Youth Olympics which started yesterday in Anchorage. Someone also set a new world record.

Autumn Ridley of Anchorage won the girls Alaskan high kick event setting a new world record of six feet 11 inches. The old record was by Annmarie Paul of Kipnuk. Paul set the old record of six feet six inches at this year's Arctic Winter Games. She finished second yesterday with a six foot seven inch kick.

In the boys event Archie Andrews of Galena won. Kicking eight feet and a half inch with no misses.

Rugby among weekend sports events

FAIRBANKS-Let's see what's happening in the Interior this weekend. Kind of a light schedule but still some interesting things going on.

Tomorrow at 10 am at Lathrop high school is the day two of the Region VI all schools track meet. Field events start at 10 and the track events begin at 11 am.

Also on Saturday at 1 pm Rugby. That's right the Fairbanks Men's Rugby Club and Ravens Rugby Club will have the SpringFest Rugby Tournament season opener on Ash Field. Ash Field is right across the street from the UAF SRC and Patty Center.

Ice Dogs have a shot to advance in the playoffs Friday

FAIRBANKS-The Ice Dogs were in a similar situation in last year's division finals with the Wenatchee Wild going into game four. Instead of being down 1-2 this year Fairbanks is up 2-1 going into the "Snatch" on Friday for game four.

The Ice Dogs were in the backseat after losing game one 4-0 then moved up to the passenger seat with a 4-2 win in game two and now they're in the driver seat of this best of five series after a 2-0 shutout win on Monday night.
