Monroe's Bynum to play for Goldpanners

FAIRBANKS- A local sports star will be playing in front of Fairbanks baseball fans before going off to college. Monroe's Scooter Bynum is listed as center fielder for this year's Alaska GoldPanners baseball team.

In January Bynum signed with Arizona Western College and recently he battled .538 with four stolen bases in a tournament in Arizona against minor leaguers from major league teams like the Cincinatti Reds, Oakland A's and San Diego Padres. Bynum will try to earn playing time as an outfielder.

Ski For Women event this Sunday at Birch Hill

FAIRBANKS-Coming up this weekend is the 12th Annual Ski For Women. The event takes place this Sunday at 12:30 up on Birch Hill.

This family fun event is put on by the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks and is a fundraiser for the Interior Alaska Center for Non-Violent Living or IAC.

Last year 160 female skiers of all ages came out to support the cause and enjoy the trails. Lots of women come in costumes which are encouraged. It's an untimed 5K course.

Mountain 100 event is record setting

FAIRBANKS-A sign that the seasons are changing is when the bikes come out. Sunday's Mountain 100-this event is a bike, ski and foot race. The 100 mile race was at the White Mountain National Rec Area just north of Fairbanks.

Fairbanks' Tyson Flaharty finished on his bike in 8hr10min but Josh Chelf of Anchroage set a new record finishing in 7h53min. Flaharty's time was also a record. Ben Abbott of Fairbanks was third as well.

Clary and Lagrone get NAHL Midwest Star of the Week awards

FAIRBANKS-Some good news coming from the NAHL for the regular season champion Ice Dogs. Some players are playing well going into the postseason and they've been recognized for it.

Ice Dogs forward Lonnie Clary was named Midwest Star of the Week today. The 19 year-old Riverside, California native scored three goals and a helper in the Ice Dogs sweep of Kenai River to end the regular season this past weekend.

Galena Hawks come away winners at Biathlon Ski Championships

FAIRBANKS-There was some Biatholn and more over the weekend up on Birch Hill. Galena was dominate in this year's Western Interior Ski Biathlon Association Championships.

The Hawks won three of four skimeister titles in three of the four age groups.

Kaleb Korta was the high school boys skimeister winning the cross country (30:26), biathlon (22:22) and relay races with Isaac McElwee (18:38).

Chezik wins 2014 Tok Race of Champions

TOK-After Sunday's time totals were calculated the Tok Race of Champions has a new champion. Ken Chezik won this year's Tok Race with a two day total time of 103:53 seconds in the open class with 10 dogs.

Chezik said the trails were perfect and fast as he finished Sunday's 16 mile race in 52:12 receiving $1,650 of the $7500 purse.

Mark Hartum roared back on Sunday jumping from fourth to runner-up by just two seconds beating out Rob Pebble for second place. Hartum finished in 52:43 on Sunday and had a total time of 105:14.

Former Nooks represent in 27th Sonot Kkaazoot

FAIRBANKS-Saturday's 27th Sonot Kkaazoot which started and ended in downtown Fairbanks had 244 skiers compete in this spring time-long distance skiing event. By the end of the races a number of former Nanooks and high school standouts placed high.

Cody Priest, a former Nook, won the 50K freestyle in 2:21:58. Fellow former Nanook Alex Morris was second and Isaac Lammers, a current UAF skier, was third.
