UAF volleyball adds a middle block and setter for next season

FAIRBANKS-The Nanook volleyball also picked up two players today. Miranda Grieser and Kensey Mix both signed NLIs to be Nanooks in the fall.

Mix is 5'11" middle blocker coming in from Blue Mountain CC in Pendelton Oregon. Mix had 18 blocks, 45 kills, hitting at 39 percent as Blue Mountain won the last two Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championships and went 14-0 in the East Region.

UAF women's head coach and officials respond to allegations

FAIRBANKS-UAF officials and women's basketball head coach Cody Bench respond to our story yesterday on the departure of women's assistant head coach Amy Senefelder and the recent allegations against the women's basketball program.

UAF athletic director Dr. Gary Gray and head coach Cody Bench refute and deny the allegations of the misuse of department funds for road trips during the women's basketball season and that money was already spent on a search for a new assistant coach. Dr. Gray holds that the allegations are inaccurate.

Flag football on the horizon for the Interior

FAIRBANKS-There has been a lot of talk recently about girls flag football in the Interior. All the talk has turned into action. In recent weeks all of the MAC schools have made moves to make flag football a reality this fall.

West Valley was the first domino to fall hiring boys basketball coach Kimani Shotwell as the Wolfpack's flag football head coach. Lathrop has hired Lance Cheney, to coach their flag football team. Then last week Nick Rodgers was named head coach of North Pole's flag football squad. Rogers was the boys JV football coach last season.

Standout freshman is UAF's swimming MVP

FAIRBANKS-The Nanook swim team recently gave out their team awards and one freshman had a year to remember.

Victoria Adams closed out her first year as a Nanook swimmer winning MVP, Rookie of the Year and Most Improved.

Adams earned six All-American honors, led the team in scoring at the PCSC Championships, won 10 individual events at dual meets and even won the Blue-Gold Penthalon to start the year. She set new program records including one in the 200 IM.

UAF men's cross country sign two in-state stars to NLIs

FAIRBANKS-The UAF men's cross country and ski teams land their first two recruits of the 2014 signing period and they're from the 49th state. Today Lyon Kopsack of Colony High School signed his NLI to run for the Nanooks in the fall.

Kopsack is the first to sign to the cross country team. Colony's cross country team captain is a 4 sports athlete with a PR of 16:44 in the 5K and won Mount Marathon in 2013. Kopsack is the man in the classroom as he will be Colony's Valedictorian this spring. He plans to major in petroleum engineering.

Perry's goal named top ten play of the year for NCAA hockey

FAIRBANKS-Some pretty cool UAF hockey news today. Remember Garrick Perry's game winning overtime goal back in October over Denver? Well Perry's game winning Bobby Orr style goal in the Brice Alaska Goal was no. 9 in the NCAA's Top Hockey plays of the year.

Perry's goal against then 12th ranked Denver came with less than a minute left in overtime and gave the Nanooks a 3-2 win. It was UAF's first win over a ranked a opponent at the point f the season and the Nooks went on to their second straight Alaska Goal Rush Title.

Lathrop girls start soccer season 3-0

PALMER-Over the weekend the Lathrop girls soccer team goes 3-0 on the road.

The Mutes shutout their third straight opponent this time 4-0 over Palmer. Lathrop shutout Wasilla and Colony as well.

Mikayala Triplehorn has triple shutouts as Lathrop's goalie. Karli Fitzgerald scored twice in the win with Savannah Garrett and Cheyene Dilbert also scoring.

The boys team scored their first goal of the season but fell 2-1 to Palmer on Saturday. The Lathrop boys are 0-3 to start the season.

Next up is MAC foe North Pole on April 29th.
