Local athletes place in top five at NYO

ANCHORAGE-Some local athletes did well in the Native Youth Olympics which started yesterday in Anchorage. Someone also set a new world record.

Autumn Ridley of Anchorage won the girls Alaskan high kick event setting a new world record of six feet 11 inches. The old record was by Annmarie Paul of Kipnuk. Paul set the old record of six feet six inches at this year's Arctic Winter Games. She finished second yesterday with a six foot seven inch kick.

In the boys event Archie Andrews of Galena won. Kicking eight feet and a half inch with no misses.

Rugby among weekend sports events

FAIRBANKS-Let's see what's happening in the Interior this weekend. Kind of a light schedule but still some interesting things going on.

Tomorrow at 10 am at Lathrop high school is the day two of the Region VI all schools track meet. Field events start at 10 and the track events begin at 11 am.

Also on Saturday at 1 pm Rugby. That's right the Fairbanks Men's Rugby Club and Ravens Rugby Club will have the SpringFest Rugby Tournament season opener on Ash Field. Ash Field is right across the street from the UAF SRC and Patty Center.

Ice Dogs have a shot to advance in the playoffs Friday

FAIRBANKS-The Ice Dogs were in a similar situation in last year's division finals with the Wenatchee Wild going into game four. Instead of being down 1-2 this year Fairbanks is up 2-1 going into the "Snatch" on Friday for game four.

The Ice Dogs were in the backseat after losing game one 4-0 then moved up to the passenger seat with a 4-2 win in game two and now they're in the driver seat of this best of five series after a 2-0 shutout win on Monday night.

The Alaska hockey team signs two teammates

FAIRBANKS-The Alaska Nanook hockey team announced its first two signing of the signing period to the team today. A pair of teammates from the Waterloo BlackHawks of the USHL, forwards Peter Krieger and Austin Vieth signed NLIs to UAF.

Vieth and Krieger helped the Blackhawks get the Western Conference top seed in the USHL with a 44-11-5 record.

Krieger was an all NAHL Rookie first teamer with the Aberdeen Wings. So far he's tallied 121 points in 119 games for Waterloo.

UAF volleyball adds a middle block and setter for next season

FAIRBANKS-The Nanook volleyball also picked up two players today. Miranda Grieser and Kensey Mix both signed NLIs to be Nanooks in the fall.

Mix is 5'11" middle blocker coming in from Blue Mountain CC in Pendelton Oregon. Mix had 18 blocks, 45 kills, hitting at 39 percent as Blue Mountain won the last two Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championships and went 14-0 in the East Region.

UAF women's head coach and officials respond to allegations

FAIRBANKS-UAF officials and women's basketball head coach Cody Bench respond to our story yesterday on the departure of women's assistant head coach Amy Senefelder and the recent allegations against the women's basketball program.

UAF athletic director Dr. Gary Gray and head coach Cody Bench refute and deny the allegations of the misuse of department funds for road trips during the women's basketball season and that money was already spent on a search for a new assistant coach. Dr. Gray holds that the allegations are inaccurate.

Flag football on the horizon for the Interior

FAIRBANKS-There has been a lot of talk recently about girls flag football in the Interior. All the talk has turned into action. In recent weeks all of the MAC schools have made moves to make flag football a reality this fall.

West Valley was the first domino to fall hiring boys basketball coach Kimani Shotwell as the Wolfpack's flag football head coach. Lathrop has hired Lance Cheney, to coach their flag football team. Then last week Nick Rodgers was named head coach of North Pole's flag football squad. Rogers was the boys JV football coach last season.
