Hutchison's Hasting signs NLI for Highline CC

FAIRBANKS-Today at Hutchison High School senior forward Vanessa Hasting signed her national letter of intent. She'll still be a bird. Hasting signed with the Highline Community College Thunderbirds of the NWAACC. Highline is in Des Moines, Washington near Seattle.

The Thunderbirds went 19-11 overall and 10-6 in their division for a birth into the women's tournament. Hasting could face former teammate Mimi Wood who is at Skagit CC. Skagit and Highline played each other last season.

Lathrop soccer teams split season openers

PALMER-The Lathrop girls start their season well winning 2-0 over Colony last night.

The Mutes got two goals in the second half. One by Mikayla Triplehorn and the other from Alexis Shipman. Triplehorn also got the shutout for Lathrop getting a big save in the second half to deny a late rally from the Knights.

The boys were on the opposite side of scoreboard as the Colony boys cruised to a 6-0 victory.

Freshmen goalie Jake Carlson had 20 saves against the no.2 team in Alaska. Both Lathrop squads take on the Wasilla Warriors tonight.

UAF's Jaime (Beyerle) retires from rifle due to back injury

FAIRBANKS-Yesterday in a press release from USA Shooting former UAF rifle great Jamie Beyerle Gray announced she is retiring. A back injury has forced Gray's retirement.

She will be just 31 years old in May but Gray has been suffering from degeneration of cartilage in her lower back and a bulging disc. Her back has been a problem since 2010 when training and competing.

However, the former Nanook retires on top having won the Olympic gold in 2012 at the London games. She set Olympic records in the 50 meter 3 position along the way. Gray is also a 2010 World Champion.

Ice Dogs face playoff rival Wenatchee in division finals again

FAIRBANKS-After winning their five game series over Kenai River the Fairbanks Ice Dogs host the Midwest division finals against another rival. The Wenatchee Wild.

The Wild are also battled tested winning their series against the Minnesota Wilderness in five games including a 1-0 overtime win in the clincher.

The Ice Dogs won the season series between the two squads 8-4. The real rivalry will be turned up a notch because Wentachee ended the Ice Dogs season last year in the division finals in five games.

Service's 4A player of the year signs with UAF basketball

FAIRBANKS-The Nanook basketball team lands an all-state recruit. Today Reece Robinson of Service High School signed a National Letter of Intent to be a Nanook.

Robinson was the 4A player of the year averaging 17 points, eight rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.8 steals per game.

He led the Cougars in their state title run winning 49-47 over West in the final this year. It's Service's first state title since 1991.

The 6-4 do everything forward was all-state first team, an all-state tournament pick and the Cook Inlet Conference MVP.

Roller Derby at the Carlson this Saturday

FAIRBANKS-Something you can roll into this weekend at the Carlson Center is a roller derby double header.

This Saturday at 6pm the Cold'n Heart Junior Derby and Fairbanks Gold Diggers take on the Raven Rebels. The Rebels were state tournament runner-ups last year.

It's $16 dollars at the door but a portion of the proceeds go to the Fairbanks Children's Museum. The Fairbanks junior derby team, which has 10-17 year-olds, ends their regular season on Saturday.
