UAF's Sherry places for U.S. in ISSF competition in Germany

STUHL, GERMANY-Rising junior Tim Sherry of the Alaska Rifle team did more than represent UAF in Germany this week. He was representing the U.S.

Sherry competed in the first International Shooting Sport Federation Junior Cup in Suhl, Germany this week. He was the only American in this shooting competition that had shooters from Finland, Russia, Austria and Denmark.

Sherry placed sixth out 66 shooters in the 50M three position event. He finished 27th in the 50M prone discipline out of 70 shooters and placed 44th in a 94 person field in the 10-meter air rifle event.

Lathrop girls place 6th, West Valley boys eliminated from state soccer tourn.

ANCHORAGE-The soccer season has ended for two of our Interior teams. Earlier today the Lathrop girls lost to Dimond 3-2.

It was a back and forth game as Lathrop was up 2-1 at the half thanks to Alexis Shipman and Kaitlan Spencer goals in the first half. Lathrop trailed early on after A Hannah Seild goal at the 7th minute for Dimond 0-1.

The Lynx completed the comeback as Maila Lyken's scored the game winner at the 76th minute. Seild had two goals to lead the Lynx.

Lathrop finishes sixth in the state and won 10 total games this season with a 10-2-2 record.

Malemutes three-peat as MAC baseball champions

FAIRBANKS-Last night on the diamond two cross town rivals collided for the MAC baseball championship. The West Valley Wolfpack and Lathrop Malemutes. It was West Valley's senior night as four seniors were recognized before the game.

It was a pitching duel between West Valley senior Casey Lewandoski and Lathrop senior Terrell Ford. Ford was hot striking out four straight batters to start this game.

But the Wolfpack got it going behind a bases-loaded hit from senior Jordan Rodenberger driving in two runs for West Valley. They led 4-1 at the end of four innings.

Sluka and MacDonald win on GFRA's opening night

FAIRBANKS-It was opening night at the Mitchell Raceway last evening and chance #1 for racers to begin stacking points towards a 2014 championship.

The crowd was treated to roaring engines and flying dirt as the five car classes spun their wheels and looked to make an opening night statement.

The mini-bombers, dollar stock cars, sportman, modified and sprint cars ran hard through the first heats setting up main battles to cap the night. The modified main winner was Scott Sluka in the blue and bright 5 - 5.

7-on-7 Flag Football Tournament next weekend

FAIRBANKS-Here's a heads up on an event that's happening next weekend at West Valley. How about some flag football for cash?

The West Valley Booster Program is holding a 7-on-7 Cash Flag Football Tournament. The winner gets $1000.

It's $350 for a whole team to register and $40 for individual sign ups. Proceeds will go to the West Valley Football Program.

In order to participate you have to be 18 years of age and not participating in college athletics. It will be a double elimination tournament at West Valley High School.

West Valley wins Region VI gymnastics title, Lathrop's Perry best all-around

FAIRBANKS-Last night high school gymnasts competed in the Region VI championships. The gymnastics season had been on a two year hiatus. Regionals culminated a season that had three meets.

West Valley came away with the Region VI championship led by Freshman Katelynn Criss-Carboy's wins on vault and floor exercise. Teammate Megan Ellis won the balance beam event.
Senior Justine Johnson was third all-around for the Wolfpack and Criss-Carboy was second. The Wolfpack tallied 139 points as a team.

Lathrop wins Railbelt title, North Pole rolls

FAIRBANKS-The Lathrop softball team wrapped up the Railbelt conference with a win last night.

The Malemutes rallied in this one after trailing 0-4 to Wasilla they answered with a seven spot in the third inning. Lathrop's Malyssa Gibson, a senior third baseman, led the charge going 3-3. Payge Scanlon-Boswood, Salena Maxwell and Cali Hoyos also went 2 for 3.

After regaining the lead Lathrop didn't allow anymore runs for Wasilla.

Trettel avenges last week's .1 loss at North Pole Speedway

NORTH POLE-Last night at the North Pole Speedway the Bandos and Legends cars got on the track for their third week of action.

In the Legends class Al Trettel in the 43 gets back on his horse after a close loss at the finish line last week. He wins Thursday night's main event. He has won two out of the three main events in the Legends class and becomes the points leader after coming in tied with Austin Cote.

Steven Hunter is the front runner in the Bandos class winning the first heat and main event on Thursday. He is the points leader with 911 points.
