Hawks make second trip to state softball tourney in three years

FAIRBANKS-One of two MAC teams are going to the state tournament and one is Hutchison. The Hutchison Hawks are young but experienced when it comes to the state tournament. This is their second state berth in the team's three year existence.

How did they get here? Hutchison finished second in the MAC with 7-5 record but gave North Pole their only conference loss this season. That win gave Hutch the confidence that they can compete and win against tough teams.

Nanooks land a record four on Capital One Academic All-American Team

FAIRBANKS-Well there are some pretty heady Nanooks at UAF. Alaska landed a school record 4 student athletes to the Capital One Academic All-American Team.

Ryan Anderson and Mats Eriksson of the rifle team, Danielle Lyons of the swimming team, who is also the first swimmer to be a Capital One Academic All-American and Alyson McPheteres of the ski team represent UAF. All four have at least 3.9 GPAs in their respective majors.

Lathrop not looking beyond Colony in state tourney

FAIRBANKS-The ASAA First National Bank Alaska State Baseball Tournament starts tomorrow. The three time Mid Alaska Champion Lathrop Malemutes set to face the Colony Knights in their first game of the state tournament.

Lathrop's only loss this year was to Chugiak and that was the second game of the year. As far as wins they defeated Colony earlier in the year so they are familiar with the Knights.

If the Malemutes win they'll play the South/Juneau winner. South won it all last season and Juneau finished third so it doesn't get any easier.

West Valley hopes pitching will show up at state tournament

FAIRBANKS-On side of the state baseball tournament bracket are the West Valley Wolfpack. On the opposite side the Lathrop Malemutes Who knows there could be an all-Interior baseball final.

West Valley's only losses this season have come to Lathrop but the Wolfpack play the South Central Champion Wasilla Warriors.

West Valley will have to clean up the mental errors in order to go deep in the tournament. They lost the MAC title game to Lathrop behind eight errors. That was one of the things the team addressed before heading to Sitka this week.

Hutchison's Edwards signs NLI for Central Lakes

FAIRBANKS-Last night a local basketball player privately signed a national letter of intent.

Hutchison guard Kiana Edwards signed her NLI to play basketball for Central Lakes College in Minnesota. Which is a junior college in Brainerd, Minnesota. Edwards signed her NLI at home.

Edwards will be a Raider for the Dennis Eastman led squad. Eastman used to coach in Valdez. He's Led Central Lakes to eight state tournaments including the Elite 8 in 2008.

Bente Heller to run for UAF Cross Country team

FAIRBANKS-Scott Jerome's women's cross country team picked up players for this fall's season through recruiting. But how about an in-house recruit?

Bente Heller, one of the best swimmer's in UAF program history, will run for the cross country team this upcoming season.

Heller, a senior, graduates after the fall semester and by running will complete 10 semesters of competition for a student athlete per a NCAA rule.

Flaharty wins Masochism on Moose Mountain

FAIRBANKS-Last evening a number of runners went out to run Moose Mountain for he second race in the Running Club North's Trail series the Masochism on Moose Mountain run. It was a 4K run up and down Moose Mountain.

After runners conquered the steep climb to the top Davya Flaharty passes the field as she rumbled down to the finish line. Flaharty finished first overall in 36:49.

Ice Dogs pick five forwards and three defensemen in NAHL Draft

FAIRBANKS-Today the Fairbanks Ice Dogs made their picks in the NAHL Draft and made some moves. Fairbanks did some wheeling and dealing trading out of the first round.

The Ice Dogs made trades with Corpus Christi, Key Stone, and Lone Star, getting two picks in the third and fourth rounds.

Forward Mitchell Bauman was the Ice Dogs first pick 48th overall in the second round. Baumna comes from Culver Prep in Indiana and is from Cedarburg, Wisconsin.
