Quinn and Gilhuly win Fourth of July volleyball tournament

FAIRBANKS-Here are the results from yesterday's Independence Day Reverse Co-Ed Sand Volleyball Tournament. The Mike Quinn and Julie Gilhuly duo only lost one match on their way to winning the championship.

Gavin Meggert and Jessica Hill were the only team to beat this year's champions. Quinn and Gilhuly won the second match in the double elimination final after Meggert and Hill took the first game.

Out of the six teams the Ryan Howdeshell and Eileen Keller team were the last seed but were able to finish third.

Another Sayre wins 29th Independence Day Run

FAIRBANKS-We start with the headline event on the Fourth of July in the Interior. The Independence Day Run. The 5K race is in its 29th year and it was at Pioneer Park.

The race route had some twist and turns as runners came around the Carlson Center, the Arco baseball field and Dog Park.

After the first mile Mikko Sayre established himself as the man to catch. Andrew Bishop kept him in sight as did Tommy Dalhill but Sayre keep this one out of reach passing the field on the way back to the finish line.

Goldpanners upend the Bucs in the ninth to win series

FAIRBANKS-Last night the Alaska Goldpanners came back in the ninth inning to clinch the series against the Anchorage Bucs.

The Panners were down 3-0 but it was tied 4-4 going into the ninth inning where Alaska got two runs and held the Bucs to one in the final frame and hold on for a 6-5 win. There were 23 total hits in this game

Vahn Bozohian led the Panners going 3-4 with the game winning two run swing that went yard in the ninth. Mike Wieland had two rbis and two doubles as well.

Littel, Trettel and Cote win at North Pole Speedway

FAIRBANKS-Last night on the farthest north racetrack in North Pole was Military Appreciation night. The North Pole Speedway teamed up with Stanley Nissan in their salute to America.

Thursday night's racing featured dual main events. One of the main events was a makeup race from a previously rained out Thursday night.

Jody Littell channeled his inner Jeff Gordon as Littell in the 24 Dupont Bandolero won both main events last night for the sweep.

GFRA races cancelled for July 4th weekend, other events

FAIRBANKS-One of the Independence weekend sports events has been cancelled. All of last week's rain overflowed the Greater Fairbanks Racing Association track and pit areas and they were not able to pump out the water so this weekend's races have been cancelled. The GFRA aims to have a two full nights of racing next weekend.

But there a couple of things to get into this weekend. In the morning the Jingle Bell Run/Walk 5K to fight Arthritis starts at 10 a.m. with registration at 8:30. The race starts at Santa Claus House in North Pole.

2014 high school football schedule released

FAIRBANKS-It's never too early to talk high school football. The 2014 high school football schedule for Interior teams was released yesterday.

The Interior football season kicks off on Aug 15 for Friday night lights at West Valley High School as the Wolfpack host the North Pole Patriots a Railbelt vs Southeastern non-conference matchup. That Saturday Aug 16 the Lathrop Malemutes will host the Bartlett Bears. The defending Greatland Conference champion Monroe Rams will host Ketchikan as well.

4th of July sports events feature running and volleyball

FAIRBANKS-The Fourth of July is tomorrow and there will be cookouts galore but before you have that hot dog or slice of pie go out for some fun. There will be a number of sports events going on that you can participate in before firing up the grill.

Out in the North Pole the first run of the day is the 4th of July 5K Elf Run. That's a Santa Claus House and it starts at 9:30 a.m. with registration at 9 a.m. It's just $20 and proceeds go towards helping the North Pole Football purchase equipment like helmets, pads, etc.

Panners start six game roadie tonight

FAIRBANKS-The Alaska Goldpanners start their six game road trip tonight. After tonight's series finale against the Bucs the Panners will have a double header on July 4 against the Chugiak Chinooks. They'll also have a double header on the July 6 with the Matsu Miners before returning to Growden on the July 8 to take on the Kenai Peninsula Oilers.

The Chinooks are last in the ABL with only five wins this season. They do have a bright spot in Steven Pollex. His four homers are tied for 2nd in the ABL.
