Two Nanooks shooters will shoot internationally this summer

FAIRBANKS-The college rifle season ended in March for the Nanooks but some UAF shooters are taking their talents to an international level.

Freshmen Sagen Maddalena and junior Ryan Anderson will compete for team USA this summer in the 51st International Shooting Sport Federation World Championships. They made the team after placing top three in air rifle in the USA Shooting Rifle/Pistol World Championship Selections Match.

Maddalena redshirted for UAF last year and went from fourth to a silver medal after three days of shooting.

Nanooks make Capital One All-Academic district teams

FAIRBANKS-Five Nanook juniors were named to the Capital One Academic All-District at Large Teams today.

Sean Cahill of the hockey team has a 3.97 GPA in business admin. He had 10-6-1 record, won seven straight games and saved at 90 percent in UAF's first season in the WCHA. He is a part of the Division I Region 8 team.

Ryan Anderson of the rifle team has a 3.92 in bio science and was this year's PRC smallbore champ and placed fourth in air rifle at the NCAA championships.

Lathrop sweeps Hutchison on the pitch

FAIRBANKS-Last night the only game in town was high school soccer double header between the Hutchison Hawks and Lathrop Malemutes. We start with the girls game and the last time these teams played it was 1-1 tie.

Lathrop was holding on to a 1-0 lead thanks to a Song Ebbesen goal in the first half.

Both teams flexed their defensive muscles. Lathrop was looking for the insurance goal but keep Angel Ochoa wasn't allowing anymore goals with a number of saves. The Hawks were attacking to tie the game again but Mikayala Triplehorn of Lathrop was also denying shots.

NAHL announces realignment, Stewart returns for fourth year

FAIRBANKS-The Ice Dogs won the NAHL Robertson Cup this past weekend and today the league announced division realignment for the 2014-2015 season.

Most notably the Wenatchee Wild will move from the Midwest to join the South Division. The South will be the largest in the NAHL with eight teams.

Amarillo, Topeka, Corpus Christi, Lone Star, Odessa, Rio Grande, Wichita Falls and now Wenatchee will make up the South.

Also the Port Huron Fighting Falcons will move to Connellsville, Pennsylvania and will become the Keystone Ice Miners but will remain in the North Division.

Lathrop teams hold on for softball and baseball wins over rivals

FAIRBANKS-Both the Lathrop and West Valley softball and baseball teams faced each other Tuesday night. The 4A rivals locked horns on the softball field and streaks were on the line.

The Lathrop Malemutes came in with a 3-0 record against MAC opponents buy West Valley has won their last three games. It was tied 1-1 going in the fifth inning before Lathrop got some breathing room with three runs in the top of the inning. However, West Valley would rally in bottom of the frame with two runs to make a 4-3 contest going in the sixth and last inning of the game.

Monroe's third inning too much for Patriots

FAIRBANKS-The Goldpanners are about a month away but the Monroe Rams hosted the North Pole Patriots last night at Growden Memorial Park.

In the bottom of the third inning with the game tied 2-2 Scotter Bynum was at the dish for the Rams sees the pitch from North Pole's Carmon Teel, make contact and goes the distance. The solo shot from Bynum starts a huge run for the Rams. Monroe reeled off eight runs on just three hits in the inning.

Teel had a rough night on the mound hitting three batters, allowing nine runs and while walking four hitters.

Interior track athletes win multiple events in last regular season meet

FAIRBANKS-The Lathrop Malemutes won the last track field meet of the regular season over the weekend and they're building some momentum for a possible regional title.

Here are some individuals who did well in that last meet of the season.

Jared Welch won the 110 and 300 meter races for the Malemutes. To'a Levi won girls discuss with a 93 feet seven inch throw and she also won shot put with a 36 feet and four and a quarter inch heave. Jared Welch was the top jumper winning the high jump clearing 6-2 and long jump in 19 feet 10 inches for Lathrop as well.

Eielson drops two in softball double header, Delta sweeps Monroe

FAIRBANKS-There were a number of softball games last night at the South Davis Fields. The late game featured the West Valley Wolfpack and the Eielson Ravens.

West Valley has been known for their strong starts to games and were ahead 8-1 in the second innnig against Eielson.

The Ravens did have some timely defense as Elise Moloney is able to hold on to a fly ball on the edge of her glove to get the final out of the inning.

But Zahn Thompson was dealing in the pitching circle for West Valley retiring 8 hitters. Autumn Hendrie went 3-4 with two doubles and three rbis.
