Kings rule Rams, Eielson opens season with a W

FAIRBANKS, HOMER-Saturday afternoon the Monroe Rams in their first game under new Head Coach Chad Comeau faced the Medium school level Ketchikan Kings out the Southeastern Conference.

Caleb Thomas scored the first touchdown for the Rams to give them a 6-0 lead from five yards away. Thomas scored twice for Monroe in the first half. This was a game. The Kings led just 13-12 at the half.

Dahill leads three winners in first Interior Alaska Cross Country Series

FAIRBANKS-The first race in the Interior Alaska Cross Country Series was on Saturday at the West Ridge Trails after the West Valley Invitational which was the first local run of the season for high school cross country runners.

Here are the results from the AK Cross Country series opener. 20 runners competed in three different categories.

Tommy Dahill won the four mile race in 24:01. Melissa Lewis was the runner up in 24:52.

West Valley football team eyes 2014 playoff spot, face North Pole in opener

FAIRBANKS-So close but yet so far. Last year the West Valley Wolfpack were one game away from making the postseason but lost 42-13 in Colony in the season finale. The pack went 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the Railbelt. Second year head coach Kyle Allison learned that preparation before game day is the most important thing.

"We wanted to make sure that every player that stepped on the field was confident in their ability and confident in their assignment also. So we just wanted to make sure our kids had better preparation and were able to execute when asked," Allison said.

Eielson poised to reclaim a smalls schools football title

EIELSON- Just three seniors return to the Eielson Raven football program this season. Albeit a young team like last season they've earned their lumps. Eielson went 5-4 overall and finished in a 3-way tie with a 5-1 record in the Greatland Conference. They want a state title like everyone else, their last one was in 2012 but they're focused on improving together as a team first.

AISG Archery event could feature future national archers

FAIRBANKS-The Alaska International Senior Games continue competition this week. Last night I caught up with some seasoned pros with Archery bows.

14 archers came out to UAF Archery Range right off Farmers Loop road by UAF's upper campus. The archers aimed at 60, 50, and 40 yard targets and shot 45 times to get the best out of 900 points. There are five different styles like Barebow and Recurve.

Ice Dogs Golf Scramble and Billey Family sign-ups

FAIRBANKS-The Fairbanks Ice Dogs will be back on the ice for the 2014-2015 season in just a few weeks. The one big event to kickoff the new season isn't one the ice-it's the Fairbanks Ice Dogs Golf Scramble.

The event is in its 14th year and it gives the chance for the new incoming Ice Dogs players to get a first hand feel for the Fairbanks hockey community and the Ice Dogs fans.

UAF volleyball nabs an in-state recruit

FAIRBANKS-The Alaska Nanook volleyball team got a late addition to their 2014 roster yesterday. Adriana Horner, from Nome-Belt , signed her national letter of intent to play for UAF and head coach Mallory Larranaga this fall. She will remain a Nanook in college.

Horner was a two-time team captain for the Nome Nanooks and was an all-conference tournament pick and was all-tournament at the West Valley Invitational. Horner was also a part of a Nome team that won consecutive 3A Western Conference championships in 2012 and 2013. She plans to major in music education.
