2014 high school football schedule released

FAIRBANKS-It's never too early to talk high school football. The 2014 high school football schedule for Interior teams was released yesterday.

The Interior football season kicks off on Aug 15 for Friday night lights at West Valley High School as the Wolfpack host the North Pole Patriots a Railbelt vs Southeastern non-conference matchup. That Saturday Aug 16 the Lathrop Malemutes will host the Bartlett Bears. The defending Greatland Conference champion Monroe Rams will host Ketchikan as well.

4th of July sports events feature running and volleyball

FAIRBANKS-The Fourth of July is tomorrow and there will be cookouts galore but before you have that hot dog or slice of pie go out for some fun. There will be a number of sports events going on that you can participate in before firing up the grill.

Out in the North Pole the first run of the day is the 4th of July 5K Elf Run. That's a Santa Claus House and it starts at 9:30 a.m. with registration at 9 a.m. It's just $20 and proceeds go towards helping the North Pole Football purchase equipment like helmets, pads, etc.

Panners start six game roadie tonight

FAIRBANKS-The Alaska Goldpanners start their six game road trip tonight. After tonight's series finale against the Bucs the Panners will have a double header on July 4 against the Chugiak Chinooks. They'll also have a double header on the July 6 with the Matsu Miners before returning to Growden on the July 8 to take on the Kenai Peninsula Oilers.

The Chinooks are last in the ABL with only five wins this season. They do have a bright spot in Steven Pollex. His four homers are tied for 2nd in the ABL.

Military Appreciation race nights start at North Pole Speedway

FAIRBANKS-It's not fourth of July weekend in the Interior without racing. North Pole Speedway and Stanley Nissan partnered to have their Salute to America for Military Appreciation tonight on the quarter mile oval track on 9 mile Badger Road. All military with ID are free.

There will be food and giveaways and as far as the action on the track it will be a double main event night. Al Trettel has a slight lead-29 points in the legends class over Austin Cote. Destiney Todd leads the Bandos class with a 71 point lead.

Deadline to sign up for Alaska State Amateur tomorrow

FAIRBANKS--Interior golfers the registration deadline for the Alaska State Amateur Golf Championship is tomorrow. This year's state Amateur is at the Settler's Bay Golf Course in Wasilla. The field size is for 120 golfers.

Last year Fairbanks' own Adam Baxter won the title while Terri McAngus won the women's championship.

Anderson wins national shooting title despite damaged rifle

FORT BENNING, GA-Rising senior and Alaska Nanook rifleman Ryan Anderson could now be referred to as MacGuyver. Anderson had a broken rifle but still won a national title.

Anderson just finished competing in the World Cups in Europe before going to Fort Benning, Georgia for the USA Shooting Rifle/Pistol National Championships last week. His gun was damaged in Europe but it was repaired in time for shooting. Whatever Anderson did it worked. Anderson won the national title in the open division men's 10 meter air rifle event.

Post rain out Goldpanners on the road for 6 games

FAIRBANKS-The Alaska Goldpanners are on their way to Anchorage today for a six game road trip. Tomorrow night they will face the Anchorage Bucs in the series finale of their five gamer. The series is tied 2-2 after the Goldpanners come from behind 5-4 victory on Monday night. The fifth game was supposed to have been on Tuesday night but it was rained out.

After the fifth game of the Bucs series Alaska will play the Chugiak Chinooks for a three game series and the Matsu Miners for two games. This will be the first meeting between the Chinooks and Miners this summer.

First day of Iditarod sign ups gets 60 signatures

WASILLA-It may be summer time but dog mushing teams and kennels are preparing for the winter's dog mushing season which includes the big one-the Iditarod.

Saturday in Wasilla was the opening day of sign ups for the 43rd Iditarod. 60 mushers signed up including four time winner Lance Mackey who returns after not mushing last year.

Martin Buser and Jeff King, two other four time winners, signed up as well as defending champion Dallas Seavey and three time runner up Aily Zirkle.
