Father and son duo finish 1-2 at North Pole Speedway

FAIRBANKS-Drivers were able to take advantage of some sun at the North Pole Speedway on Thursday night. A small field in the Legends class, just four cars but Al Trettel was in a battle for second in the main event with Ryan Cote.

Who got first? Austin Cote, Ryan's son. He earned two huge wins-the 2nd heat and the main event to stay within striking distance Trettel in the points standings. Trettel came win with a 56 point lead.

Mother and daughter duel highlights WEIO's second day

FAIRBANKS-This morning was the start of day two of the 53rd World Eskimo Indian Olympic Games. The first event was the Eskimo stick pull event where competitors sit on the floor for a mini tug of war and who ever holds on wins.

The Carlson Center was intrigued for a rematch in the women's division. Mandy Sullivan and Aizah Sullivan faced each other in the finals for the third straight year. It was another mother and daughter faceoff. Aizah won it last year but Mandy the mom, had the upper hand in 2014 winning the stick pull event.

Miners snap Goldpanners 9 game win streak

FAIRBANKS-Last night at Growden Memorial Park something kind of awkward happened. There was an uncharacteristic kind of loss.

The Alaska Goldpanners were up 1-0 in the first but Cameron Frost of the visiting Matsu Miners tied it up going deep to center field for probably the longest homer in Growden this summer.

Then in the top of the third Frost launches another long ball after a Matsu rbi. This one a two-run shot giving Matsu a 4-1 lead. Frost went 2-5 with three rbis.

Alaska Flight split in first games of Las Vegas tourney

FAIRBANKS-After their first basketball games in Las Vegas the Alaska Flight teams 16U and 17U teams split.

The 16U squad won 47-34 over Basketball BC out Canada-a wire to wire win. Trevor Osborne of Grace Christian led the Flight with 14 points and Lathrop's Gabe Howard had seven points and five assists.

The 17U squad came back and trailed 36-40 to the NOC Stars with three minutes left but fell 44-36. Next for the 16U team is the Idaho Elite and the 17U team plays the New Mexico Select.

Record setting opening day of WEIO 2014

FAIRBANKS-The first day of of the 53rd World Eskimo Indian Olympics was a day to remember. Four new world records were made.

Bernard Clark out of Wasilla set a new record in the one hand reach, touching the ball at 70 inches. Clark talks about how he trained to set the new one hand reach record.

"I've hit 70 before in practices just a couple of times and I didn't expect it to be tonight. What I've been doing hanging a 3.5mm earplug piece that goes in earphones I've been hanging that and using that to target practice for," Clark said.

Baxter places fifth in Alaska State Amateur Golf Championships

FAIRBANKS-Sunday was the final round of the Alaska State Amateur Golf Championship in Wasilla. Greg Sanders wins his second amateur title in three years. Sanders finished with a 276 score in four rounds. He was the only golfer under par at eight under at the Settler's Bay Golf Course.

Defending Champion Adam Baxter of Fairbanks finished in fifth after shooting an 81 on Sunday for a 301 total. Kevin Daniels was the runner up with a 297.

Holmes and Hudson win 15th Ester Dome Ass Kicker

FAIRBANKS-Sunday the 15th Annual Ester Dome Ass Kicker took place by the Ester Gold Camp area. 24 runners were in this year's field as they set out on the six and three quarter mile out and back course.

The trail in the fourth run of the Northern Trail Series had some hilly climbs as well as some good old mud. There was no way around but runners trekked through the bush and mud.
