Meggerts repeats as Midnight Sun volleyball champion

FAIRBANKS-On Saturday next to Growden Memorial Park local volleyball players took to the courts for the 4th Annual Midnight Sun Sand Volleyball Tournament.

Gavin Meggert successfully defended his Midnight Sun Sand Volleyball Tournament title with Nicolaus Andresen. Their only loss was to Raleigh Bartholomew and Ryan Howdeshell. In the first game of the double elimination final but Meggert and Anderson won the winner-take-all game.

Third place went Ishmael Agae and Spencer McLeod. Jessica Hill and Julie Gilhuly played in the men's division and placed fourth.

Feierabend wins Sluice Box 100

FAIRBANKS-On Sunday evening one of the toughest outdoor races in the Interior finished promptly at 7 p.m. at the FE Gold Camp. The Sluice Box 100 started on Saturday morning at the Musher's Hall on Farmer's Loop Road. Runners, bikers and relay teams had 36 hours to complete the 100 mile race.

A local Wedensday Night Ski racer ended up coming in first in the men's solo bike class. Dash Feierabend won this year's Sluice Box 100 coming through the nine legs and five checkpoints in 13 hours 15 minutes and 46 seconds.

Renfrew and Burks win FGA Senior Amateur titles

FAIRBANKS-After two days of golfing on two different local golf courses-the North Star Golf Club and the Chena Bend Golf Course on Fort Wainwright, the Fairbanks Golf Association Senior Amateur Championships results are in.

Bill Renfrew is the men's senior amateur and super senior champion. Renfrew shot a 152 gross and a 134 net score to take this year's title.

The highlight of the weekend was Tom Chadwick hitting on hole in one on the 8th hole at Chena Bend. Chadwick placed second. Paul Lindhag was placed third overall.

Baxter gets runner up in Alaska Match Play Championships

ANCHORAGE-Fairbanks' own Adam Baxter went all the way into the championship round as the sixth seed in the Alaska State Match Play Championships at JBER in Anchorage. Baxter beat out the two seed Richard Teders and three seed Kevin Daniels.

Greg Sanders would come away with this year's title with a close 6-5 win over Baxter in the Finals. Baxter won the Alaska Match Play title back in 2011 and is the reigning State Amateur Champion.

UAF hockey signee gets drafted my the Canadiens

FAIRBANKS-Some notable NHL news for Nanook hockey fans this Saturday. One future Nanook hockey player was selected in the second day of the NHL Draft today.

Nikolas Koberstein, from Barrhead, Alberta, was drafted in the fifth round, 125 overall by the Montreal Canadiens. Koberstein signed a NLI to play for the Nanooks in the 2015-2016 season.

The 6'2, 200 pound defenseman played his first year of junior hockey in the Alberta Junior Hockey League for the Olds Grizzlies.

FGA has first day of Senior Amateur at North Star

FAIRBANKS-Today also featured some competitions under a summer sun we haven't seen in a little while. The Fairbanks Golf Association had the opening day of their Senior Amateur Tournament this morning at the North Star Golf Club. Tees times started at 8 am.

A number of groupings were on the links as players swung and putted well into the afternoon.

Feierabend leading Sluice Box 100 race

FAIRBANKS-An early start for sports events happening in the Interior today. The Sluice Box 100 began at 7 a.m. at the Mushers Hall on Farmers Loop Road this morning.

The race is in its third year and 41 individuals signed up as well as 68 people who made up 15 teams for run and bike relays.

A little bit of everybody from all over the country is running or biking. There are people registered from Boulder, Colorado, Palmer, Juneau, Anchorage and even my home area of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
