IYB and Eclipse soccer to have tryouts and skills assessments soon

FAIRBANKS-Here's a heads up on some important dates coming up for Interior Youth Basketball and the Eclipse Soccer Program.

This Saturday at Tanana Middle School the IYB will have skill assessments starting from 10 a.m. for grades 3-12. It's $100 per child and it's not a tryout. Kids will be placed on teams based on their skill level. 5-8th grade will have a winter league and K-2nd grade the Little Dribblers will be in the spring.

Week 3 ASBN High School Football Polls

FAIRBANKS-Here are the lastest ASBN high school football polls. Five 2-0 teams are in the Medium-Small Schools poll.

Sohi is still ranked first but North Pole and Eielson have moved up. The Patriots are ranked second then the Ravens at three.

Nikiski is fourth and Barrow makes their first appearance in the polls at number five.

In the large schools poll. South is the top dog. Bartlett is number two, then Service, Colony and Dimond. The Lynx are 1-1.

Arnold and Macleod win Alaska State Senior Am Golf titles

FAIRBANKS-Sunday was the final day of the Alaska State Senior Amateur Championship at Chena Bend Golf Course.

William Arnold (227) out of Anchorage held on for a three stroke win for the men's championship highlighted by a 72 on day two. Peter Hakes (230) took second. Randy Merrill shot a 72 on Sunday and jumped from eighth to third (232).

Susie Macleod is this year's women's champion. Her total score of 240 included a championship flight best score of 78 on day two. Teresa Fisher (256) was second and Cathy Shuttleworth finished third (268).

Fighters take part in Midnight Sun Mayhem event

FAIRBANKS-This one is for all you fighting fans. Saturday at the Tanana Valley Fairgrounds was the Midnight Sun Mayhem event. The event featured Boxing, Thai Boxing and mixed martial arts bouts in the Borealis Pavilion. 14 fights were on the card.

How about this name? Billy the Hebrew Hammer Zimmerman won by decision in his boxing match.

In kickboxing the knockout of the night went to Jovan Askew. His vicious combo layed out Jack Syler in the first round of their bout.

Now for the unorthodox Thomas Hodge aka Afro Samurai connects with a flying elbow in his victory.

Ice Dogs first scrimmage of training camp displayed skill and goaltending

FAIRBANKS-The Fairbanks Ice Dogs had their first scrimmage of training camp at the Patty Center on Sunday. Hundreds of fans came out to see the new team. It was Maroon versus White.

Returning goalie Patrick Munson and rookie Drew Michals put on a show in the first of two 28 minute periods with a series of nice saves.

Wolfpack volleyball team opens the season against the Rams

FAIRBANKS-Head Coach Dave Cox and his Wolfpack Volleyball team are back in the gym for the 2014 season. Last year the Pack won their six straight MAC title and 5 straight regional title before finishing 7th in the state tournament.

"We had a pretty solid team, strong rotation with hitters in all positions. I think we aren't quite as strong in that respect this year but I'm hoping-I'm moving some people around a little bit and I'm hoping to fill those gaps. Once we do we'll be just as tough," Cox said.

Pats start the year 2-0 with 45-26 win over Kethchikan

NORTH POLE-The North Pole Patriots hosted the Ketchikan Kings in high school football for a special Wednesday night football game. The first day of school featured the first home game for the Pats and SEC conference game for both teams.

Before kickoff James Watson was honored during the coin toss as an honorary captain. The Patriots dedicated the field to him last night.

North Pole was up 8-0 after a touchdown from Simi Skips but Connor Hicks of Kayhi gets the Kings on the board with a shifty 61 yard run. He had three touchdowns and finished with 161 yards.

Fjare sets new record on the running trails

FAIRBANKS-One runner made heads turn on the trails this weekend. Dana Fjare was the big winner despite finishing second overall in the Granite Tors Run on Saturday. Fjare's time of 2 hours 22 minutes and 45 seconds broke a 15 year old record set by Jane LeBlond who ran 2:33:49 in 1999. The Granite Tors is the 6th race in the Northern Trails series.

Devin Mcdowell came in first in 2:19:51 to win the men's title in the Granite Tors Run.
