Wolfpack volleyball team opens the season against the Rams

FAIRBANKS-Head Coach Dave Cox and his Wolfpack Volleyball team are back in the gym for the 2014 season. Last year the Pack won their six straight MAC title and 5 straight regional title before finishing 7th in the state tournament.

"We had a pretty solid team, strong rotation with hitters in all positions. I think we aren't quite as strong in that respect this year but I'm hoping-I'm moving some people around a little bit and I'm hoping to fill those gaps. Once we do we'll be just as tough," Cox said.

Pats start the year 2-0 with 45-26 win over Kethchikan

NORTH POLE-The North Pole Patriots hosted the Ketchikan Kings in high school football for a special Wednesday night football game. The first day of school featured the first home game for the Pats and SEC conference game for both teams.

Before kickoff James Watson was honored during the coin toss as an honorary captain. The Patriots dedicated the field to him last night.

North Pole was up 8-0 after a touchdown from Simi Skips but Connor Hicks of Kayhi gets the Kings on the board with a shifty 61 yard run. He had three touchdowns and finished with 161 yards.

Malemutes look for first win against Kenai on Saturday

FAIRBANKS-The Lathrop football team aims to bounce back this weekend against their week two opponent.

The Kardinals of Kenai Central will be in Lathrop Stadium this Saturday night for a 7 p.m. kickoff for their second straight road game.

Kenai lost to Juneau-Douglas 28-15 last week. Both teams are looking for their first wins of the season.

IYB and Eclipse soccer to have tryouts and skills assessments soon

FAIRBANKS-Here's a heads up on some important dates coming up for Interior Youth Basketball and the Eclipse Soccer Program.

This Saturday at Tanana Middle School the IYB will have skill assessments starting from 10 a.m. for grades 3-12. It's $100 per child and it's not a tryout. Kids will be placed on teams based on their skill level. 5-8th grade will have a winter league and K-2nd grade the Little Dribblers will be in the spring. for more info and to register.

Anticipation for high school flag football builds after first ever Jamboree

FAIRBANKS-The interest has been building for a couple of years and now the season is approaching. Girls flag football made its debut Tuesday in the form of a Jamboree. This first game like action was a little nerve racking for some of the girls.

"I was kind of nervous at first. It was kind of scary and yet again exhilarating at the same time," Lathrop freshman quarterback Mariah Nelson said. "I had a great experience. Now I know how to just keep running, don't look back."

Lathrop and Monroe wins tennis matches

FAIRBANKS-In high school sports last evening there were more early season tennis matches.

In the battle of the dogs the Lathrop Malemutes won 4-3 over West Valley. Lathrop's Amara Hackett improves to 2-0 and Jared Lees of West Valley's continues his unbeaten MAC streak.

Eielson's only player John Rice, won 6-1, 6-0 over Jacob Rauenhorst of Monroe but the Rams defeat Hutch 5-2.

Hutchison flag football team anxious for season to start

FAIRBANKS-The flag football season is almost ready to start here in the Interior and the Hutchison Hawks are anxious to get the season going.

Head coach Ronda Driscoll will be entering here first year at the helm. She's an avid college football fan and is an Oregon Duck to the core. She has a roster of 15 already sees where the Hawks can be effective.
