Fighters take part in Midnight Sun Mayhem event

FAIRBANKS-This one is for all you fighting fans. Saturday at the Tanana Valley Fairgrounds was the Midnight Sun Mayhem event. The event featured Boxing, Thai Boxing and mixed martial arts bouts in the Borealis Pavilion. 14 fights were on the card.

How about this name? Billy the Hebrew Hammer Zimmerman won by decision in his boxing match.

In kickboxing the knockout of the night went to Jovan Askew. His vicious combo layed out Jack Syler in the first round of their bout.

Now for the unorthodox Thomas Hodge aka Afro Samurai connects with a flying elbow in his victory.

Week 3 ASBN High School Football Polls

FAIRBANKS-Here are the lastest ASBN high school football polls. Five 2-0 teams are in the Medium-Small Schools poll.

Sohi is still ranked first but North Pole and Eielson have moved up. The Patriots are ranked second then the Ravens at three.

Nikiski is fourth and Barrow makes their first appearance in the polls at number five.

In the large schools poll. South is the top dog. Bartlett is number two, then Service, Colony and Dimond. The Lynx are 1-1.

Hawks win volleyball opener in four over North Pole

FAIRBANKS-Two more Interior teams had their high school volleyball season openers. Last night right off of University Ave the Hutchison Hawks took on the North Pole Patriots in a non-conference game.

The Patriots showed no early signs of rust. The young team with four sophomores and 3 seniors rallied to win the first set 25-22. Megan Smith provided the game deciding point.

Patriots get a close win in tennis, West Valley rolls

FAIRBANKS-The North Pole Patriots eeked out a win over Lathrop in tennis. The Patriots won three of the four doubles matches and Dana Lemay got a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lathrop's Amara Hackett.

The West Valley Wolfpack won big over Hutchison 6-1. The Wolfpack won every match except girls doubles.

West Valley's Jared Lees had two matches and won both. 6-0, 6-0 over Austin Evans of Hutch to and 6-0, 6-2 over Eielson's John Rice.

Teresa Sample also swept her girls singles match for the Wolfpack 6-0, 6-0 over Cheyenne Martinez.

Lathrop sweeps Delta in first volleyball game

FAIRBANKS-Last night at Joe T Court the Lathrop Malemutes took the court for the first time. Not the basketball team but the volleyball team. They had their season opener in a non-conference game against the Delta Junction Huskies.

Lathrop came out strong with 25-5 win in the opening set. Cheyenne Dibert, the sophomore set the tone with 8 kills and 8 aces to lead Lathrop.
Nadine Velasco got in on the action as well with a nice spike.

The Huskies showed some life in the second set but the Mutes were able to hold them off for a 25-16 decision in the second set.

High school swimming starts this weekend

FAIRBANKS-Bringing up the rear for the fall prep sports schedule is high school swimming. The first swim meet of the season is this weekend. The Lathrop Invitational starts this Friday evening at 6 pm. and continues Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at the Hamme Pool. Lathrop, Hutchison, West Valley, North Pole, Monroe and Palmer will be in the pools this weekend.

Anticipation for high school flag football builds after first ever Jamboree

FAIRBANKS-The interest has been building for a couple of years and now the season is approaching. Girls flag football made its debut Tuesday in the form of a Jamboree. This first game like action was a little nerve racking for some of the girls.

"I was kind of nervous at first. It was kind of scary and yet again exhilarating at the same time," Lathrop freshman quarterback Mariah Nelson said. "I had a great experience. Now I know how to just keep running, don't look back."

High school football matchups for week three, West Valley seeks first win

FAIRBANKS-The high school football season is already into week three. Some teams will try to stay undefeated.

The North Pole Patriots, ranked number 2 in the medium-small schools poll are in Palmer to take on the Moose Thursday at 7 p.m. for their second non-conference game. North Pole is 2-0 and 1-0 in the SEC after defeating Ketchikan 46-25 last Wednesday night.
