Day 3 of the Flint Hills Resources Nanook Classic starts at 11 am. UAF takes on St. Edwards and then UAF faces Tiffin at 7 p.m. in the Patty Center.
FAIRBANKS-Thursday night was the opening night of the 16th Annual Flint Hills Resources Nanook Classic. It was the season opener for the Nanooks who hosted the St. Edwards Hilltoppers.
True freshman Riley Podowicz scored the first point of the game and the season for UAF. She finished with eight kills in her debut. But the Hilltoppers would come away with 25-19 win the first set.
The Hilltoppers kept the momentum going in the second seat and held off UAF for a 25-22 win. Hannah Rauch had nine of her team high 15 kills in that set.
NORTH POLE-There were more firsts last night for local flag football teams. Hutchison visited North Pole and it was the first ever flag football game for both teams.
North Pole's first touchdown in program history occurred in the first quarter. Grace Lumpkin hit Savannah Moisan for an 18 yard touchdown. Moisan, a senior and soccer star for the Pats, wasn't done. She showed off her speed and juke moves in the third quarter with a 59 yard scamper to the endzone 13-0 North Pole.
FAIRBANKS-In volleyball the Monroe Rams, on the road, take out the Colony Knights in 5 sets The Rams are now 2-0. Marissa King led the Rams with 16 Kills.
North Pole swept Eielson 25-18, 25-22, 25-19 and improve to 1-1. Lexi Smith had 9 assists and 5 aces for the Ravens who are now 0-3.
In tennis on Thursday there were some close matches. Hutchison won 4-3 over Monroe. The Rams won both girls singles matches, mixed doubles and girls doubles matches.
Monroe's Morgan Withers def Cheyenne Martinez 2-6, 8-6, 11-9.
FAIRBANKS-Last night at West Valley High School was the first ever girls flag football game between local high school teams and it was the dog bowl. The Malemutes and the Wolfpack.
It was a game that turned out to be about defense for both squads. The first half went scoreless. But midway through the third quarter defense would turn into offense as Mariah Nelson, the freshman snatches an interception and that's to the crib. The first touchdown in Interior flag football history is a 76 yard pick-six for the Malemutes.
FAIRBANKS-This weekend is the Alaska Cross Country Invitational on the West Ridge Trails. The first and only home meet for the Nanooks. They invite 2 new schools but what's new is depth that the women's team has.
