Anticipation for high school flag football builds after first ever Jamboree

FAIRBANKS-The interest has been building for a couple of years and now the season is approaching. Girls flag football made its debut Tuesday in the form of a Jamboree. This first game like action was a little nerve racking for some of the girls.

"I was kind of nervous at first. It was kind of scary and yet again exhilarating at the same time," Lathrop freshman quarterback Mariah Nelson said. "I had a great experience. Now I know how to just keep running, don't look back."

Weekend sports rundown

FAIRBANKS-Let's take a look at what's going this weekend for Interior sports.

Tomorrow there is an early high school football game. Eielson hosts Voznesenka at 10 a.m. on Buck Nystrom Field. Also the Monroe Rams take on no.4 Nikiski at 1 pm at Kiwanis Field right behind the Big Dipper.

In cross country the Interior Invitational starts at 11 a.m. with the girls' race. The boys race is at 11:45 a.m. at the Birch Hill Rec Area.

For high school swimming it will be day two of the Lathrop Invitational at the Hamme Pool on Saturday. That begins at 11 a.m.

High school swimming starts this weekend

FAIRBANKS-Bringing up the rear for the fall prep sports schedule is high school swimming. The first swim meet of the season is this weekend. The Lathrop Invitational starts this Friday evening at 6 pm. and continues Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at the Hamme Pool. Lathrop, Hutchison, West Valley, North Pole, Monroe and Palmer will be in the pools this weekend.

Lathrop sweeps Delta in first volleyball game

FAIRBANKS-Last night at Joe T Court the Lathrop Malemutes took the court for the first time. Not the basketball team but the volleyball team. They had their season opener in a non-conference game against the Delta Junction Huskies.

Lathrop came out strong with 25-5 win in the opening set. Cheyenne Dibert, the sophomore set the tone with 8 kills and 8 aces to lead Lathrop.
Nadine Velasco got in on the action as well with a nice spike.

The Huskies showed some life in the second set but the Mutes were able to hold them off for a 25-16 decision in the second set.

Patriots get a close win in tennis, West Valley rolls

FAIRBANKS-The North Pole Patriots eeked out a win over Lathrop in tennis. The Patriots won three of the four doubles matches and Dana Lemay got a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lathrop's Amara Hackett.

The West Valley Wolfpack won big over Hutchison 6-1. The Wolfpack won every match except girls doubles.

West Valley's Jared Lees had two matches and won both. 6-0, 6-0 over Austin Evans of Hutch to and 6-0, 6-2 over Eielson's John Rice.

Teresa Sample also swept her girls singles match for the Wolfpack 6-0, 6-0 over Cheyenne Martinez.

Holmes wins Northern Trail Series title, McDowell wins Musk Ox Run

FAIRBANKS-The seventh and final run of the Northern Trails Running series took place Thursday night. The Musk Ox Run. A number of runners trying to get their last points of the running season. The 11 mile run started at the UAF Musk Ox Farm.

It was a little chilly and a little rain out there last night but that didn't stop Devin McDowell, the Flint Hills Cup champion. McDowell finished the race in 1:14:38 for first place.

Hutchison and West Valley volleyball teams gets wins

FAIRBANKS-The Hutchison Hawks had their second home game of the season on Thursday night. Lathrop was coming off a win over Delta and Hutch beat North Pole in their opener.

Hutchison took the first two sets 25-8, 25-14.The Mutes were fighting back trying to avoid the sweep. Tyra Do led Lathrop with six kills as the Malemutes led much of the third set.
Hutchison would rally getting timely kills from Michaela Heyrend and Annalee Tidwell. Tidwell had six kills and Lina Heinrichs had 10 blocks.

Patriots fall short of a big win at Palmer

FAIRBANKS-Last night the North Pole Patriots football team almost won another classic game. In another shootout the Patriots led 49-48 with about four minutes left but Palmer scored in the final minute and survived 54-49 for their first win of the season.

Chase Ferris scored the game winner when the ball fell into his hands after a tipped pass by the Patriots.
