West Valley's Sigmon and Brackett sing NLIs

FAIRBANKS-The off-season has started for a number of sports but it's also the start of something new-new careers. Today at West Valley high school Travon Brackett and Trusty Sigmon signed national letters of intent.

Brackett, who committed early to Anchilla College in Donaldson, Indiana, will be a Charger this fall. Brackett was an All-MAC Conference, 4A All-State, and All-State tournament pick in basketball in his senior season. He averaged just under 22 points and 10 rebounds per game. He had three assist and two steals per game with 16 double doubles on the year.

2014 Arctic Man starts this weekend

FAIRBANKS-The 2014 Arctic Man is this slated for this Friday. Conditions are looking good for Friday's main event. Last year was historic.

Tyler Acklestad and Marco Sullivan three-peated in the men's ski event for a new Arctic Man record. Nate Holland set a new men's snowboard record finishing in four minutes and 26 seconds for back to back titles. 2013 featured the first adaptive class where skiers went down on one ski as well.

At least 32 teams have signed up this year including an ESPN X-games team. This year's purse is over $110K.

Robertson named WCHA Commissioner

ST. PAUL, MINN-Today in Saint Paul Minnesota Bill Robertson was officially named as the new WCHA commissioner. Robertson is from Saint Paul and brings with him major league experience.

He was the Vice President of Communications and Broadcasting for over a decade for the NHL's Minnesota Wild and Minnesota Sports and Entertainment. Before that he was a director of communications for the Anaheim Angels, Mighty Ducks and the Minnesota Timberwolves NBA franchise.

Lathrop opens preseason in track with nice outings

ANCHORAGE-Over the weekend in high school sports local track and field athletes got their first taste of track season. At the Big C Relays in the Dome in Anchorage Lathrop started the preseason strong with four top three finishes in four individual events and two top three places in relays.

Jociece Cannon, Tyreke Jennis, Travis Phillips, and Chris Seminario won the 4x100 meter relay by .4 over a team from California in 45.01 seconds. Braedon Hoppough, Jamarcus Jiles, Cannon and Seminario placed third in the 800 sprint medley relays.

Hendricks win first Denali Dog 140 race

FAIRBANKS-After Sunday's first ever Denali Dog 140 mile race a musher from Two-Rivers comes in the first. Jessica Hendricks won the inaugural Denali Dog 140 in 21 hours and five minutes.

John Schandalmeier is the founder of and race director of this new race. Mushers had a nine dog limit and went 70 miles from the Water's Edge Bed and Breakfast to the Alpine Lodge and Back. There was a six hour mandatory rest at the Lodge.

After Hendricks was Tero Geron (21:46), Karin Hendricksen (22:19), Rae Shorer (22:37) and Tim Muto (23:02) for the top five.
