2014 NAHL Draft starts tomorrow morning

FAIRBANKS-Tomorrow at 1 p.m. central time will be the 2014 NAHL Draft. After the Ice Dog May camps this is the next step in their quest for a repeat. The Fairbanks Ice Dogs will have the 24th pick in the first round.

NAHL teams will draft until each club's protected reaches 30 total players. The 30 players are made up of veteran players, tendered players and drafted players-that from the league website.

State tournament matchups set for baseball

SITKA-After this weekend's last high school softball and baseball games the conference and state tournament seedings are set. We start with baseball as the ASAA First National Bank Alaska State Baseball Tournament starts this Thursday at Moller Park at Sitka High School.

The Lathrop Malemutes, who won their third straight MAC title on Friday night with an 8-5 win over West Valley, will play Colony at 10 am on Thursday. Colony finished fourth in the state tourney last year and is the second place South Central Conference team.

State tournament matchups set for softball

ANCHORAGE-Three Interior high school softball teams will head down for their state tournament this week. The state softball tournament starts this Friday in Anchorage at the Cartee Fields.

In the large schools bracket-Lathrop the number seed out of the Railbelt has a first round bye. They will face the winner of the South and West Game a no.2 vs no.3 CIC matchup.

If South wins it will be a rematch from last year's state title game. Lathrop lost two south 10-2 in the state final. Lathrop's game is at 3:30 on Field 1 on Friday.

Interior players on All-MAC baseball and All-Railbelt softball teams

FAIRBANKS-Some of the best in the Mid Alaska Conference will be at the baseball state tournament and four of them are on Lathrop's squad.

Terrell Ford, Wyatt Berg, Matt VanMuelken and Camron Walker were all-MAC picks for the Malemutes.

Monroe had thre all-MAC performers in Scooter Bynum, Nick Fleming and Tyler Wells.

The Other All-MAC selections include West Valley's Casey Lewandoski and Tyler Christman, North Pole's Tyler Hill and Jason Donald. Donny Prasad of Delta rounds out the 2014 All-MAC team.

Lindaas and Flaharty win Two-Way Torture Test

FAIRBANKS-The Pump House Restaurant was the site, start and finish location of the Two-Way Torture Test. Two person teams take off in opposite directions to complete a 13.1 mile race.
In less than an hour and a half finishers approached the tape.

The top men's finisher was Jakob Lindaas coming in at 1:22:46. About two minutes later Ted Alder was the runner up in 1:25:13. The first women to finish was Davya Flaharty who was third overall in 1:27:49.

UAF's Sherry places for U.S. in ISSF competition in Germany

STUHL, GERMANY-Rising junior Tim Sherry of the Alaska Rifle team did more than represent UAF in Germany this week. He was representing the U.S.

Sherry competed in the first International Shooting Sport Federation Junior Cup in Suhl, Germany this week. He was the only American in this shooting competition that had shooters from Finland, Russia, Austria and Denmark.

Sherry placed sixth out 66 shooters in the 50M three position event. He finished 27th in the 50M prone discipline out of 70 shooters and placed 44th in a 94 person field in the 10-meter air rifle event.

Lathrop girls place 6th, West Valley boys eliminated from state soccer tourn.

ANCHORAGE-The soccer season has ended for two of our Interior teams. Earlier today the Lathrop girls lost to Dimond 3-2.

It was a back and forth game as Lathrop was up 2-1 at the half thanks to Alexis Shipman and Kaitlan Spencer goals in the first half. Lathrop trailed early on after A Hannah Seild goal at the 7th minute for Dimond 0-1.

The Lynx completed the comeback as Maila Lyken's scored the game winner at the 76th minute. Seild had two goals to lead the Lynx.

Lathrop finishes sixth in the state and won 10 total games this season with a 10-2-2 record.

Malemutes three-peat as MAC baseball champions

FAIRBANKS-Last night on the diamond two cross town rivals collided for the MAC baseball championship. The West Valley Wolfpack and Lathrop Malemutes. It was West Valley's senior night as four seniors were recognized before the game.

It was a pitching duel between West Valley senior Casey Lewandoski and Lathrop senior Terrell Ford. Ford was hot striking out four straight batters to start this game.

But the Wolfpack got it going behind a bases-loaded hit from senior Jordan Rodenberger driving in two runs for West Valley. They led 4-1 at the end of four innings.
