Lathrop sweeps West Valley and places 4th in state baseball tourney

SITKA-Two local cross town rivals met on the diamond today at the state baseball tournament in Sitka. The dawgs. The West Valley Wolfpack and Lathrop Malemutes went at it for the third time this season. Today fourth place in the state tournament was on the line.

Lathrop won the first two meetings and they would win the third and final meeting of the 2014 season. The Malemutes defeat West Valley 8-2 after leading 5-0 in the bottom of the third.

Lathrop finishes the 2014 season with a fourth place finish at state losing just two games the whole year.

Hutch and NorthPole eliminated from state softball tournament

ANCHORAGE-The other two Interior softball teams didn't fare as well in the small schools state softball tournament.

North Pole and Hutchison were eliminated last night after suffering two losses on Friday.

Homer defeated North Pole 8-3 to end the Patriots season and Kodiak shutout Hutchison 10-0. North Pole and Hutch were the one and two seeds from the MAC.

Monroe's Scooter Bynum gets drafted by the Cincinnati Reds

FAIRBANKS-Today's big news is that one local product was drafted into the Big Leagues. The Cincinnati Reds picked Monroe Ram Roderick Scooter Bynum in the 18th round of the Major League Baseball draft.

Bynum was picked 545 overall on the third day of the draft. He's the third Interior baseball player in be drafted in a decade. Chris Aure of Eielson in 2008 to the Pirates and Ryan Shaver of Lathrop in 2004 to the Giants are the other Interior draftees.

Malemute softball team mounts crazy comeback and win late

ANCHORAGE-The Lathrop Malemutes were down 0-4 in the 6th inning of their state tournament opener against the West Anchorage Eagles. The Eagles defeated Lathrop back in early May but this time Lathrop would prevail.

The Malemutes closed the final two innings scoring 5 unanswered runs to get a 5-4 win over West dropping them into the loser's bracket.

Recent Lathrop graduate Salena Maxwell led the Malemutes going 3-4 with an rbi. Payge Boswood went 2-4 with two rbis for the Malemutes as well.

Lathrop will play East Anchorage Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

Hutch and North Pole lose big in state softball openers

FAIRBANKS-It's Day one of the ASAA First National Bank Alaska State Softball tournament at the Cartee Fields in Anchorage. Rough first games for Hutchison and North Pole in the small schools state tournament.

The Hawks lost Homer 17-1 and North Pole was blown out by Kethcikan in a 27-0.

But it's a double elimination tournament so both teams have another chance. Hutch will play either Ketchikan or Kodiak and North Pole will face Homer or Juneau.

Lathrop and West Valley will clash in state baseball tournament

SITKA-At the state baseball tournament Lathrop and West Valley had consolation semifinal games today.

Lathrop came back down 0-2 to win 5-2 over Juneau Douglas today getting three runs in the last two innings to break a 2-2 tie.

The West Valley Wolfpack played Eagle River today and never trailed in their 7-4 win over the Wolves. The Wolfpack got five runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Flaharty wins first stage of Tour of Fairbanks

FAIRBANKS-The first stage of the Tour of Fairbanks happened yesterday in the Parks Highway Prologue Time Trial. Cyclists went out in one minute intervals on the uphill six mile course.

Defending Tour of Fairbanks champion Tyson Flaharty of Goldstream Sports had the top overall time despite leaving last. Flaharty finished in 19:07.8.

UAF's skier Logan Hanneman was second in 21:04.2 for Raven Racing. Erik Ostberg of Team Trek Alaska placed 3rd in 21:24. Julie Schwab was the top women's cyclists with her time of 27:14.4

First All Comers Track Meet results

FAIRBANKS-About 20 runners made it out to West Valley for the first All-Comers Track meet of the year.

The event at West Valley is in its 38th year and the dedicated runners were out in the rain for the 1, 2, 4 and 800 meter races, the mile, 3000 and 5000 meters.

Cedar Gray won the men's 100 meters in 12.6 seconds. Runner up David Brannan finished in 13.2 but he won the 400 in 1:05.5

Roger Sayre won the 800 in 2:29. Ted Alder won the mile and 5000 meter races while Rob Baker won the 3000 meters.
