Runnning veteran takes first Dusk 2 Dawn run

FAIRBANKS-Well yesterday the rain cancelled the races at the North Pole Speedway and game one of the Goldpanners Midnight Sun series with the Lake Eerie Monarchs. But that didn't stop 13 runners from going out to the Dusk to Dawn run while you were asleep.

Participants braved the rain and wet conditions to run as long as they could in 131 minutes on a 3.5 mile loop starting at UAF's West Ridge Trails. It started at 12:47 am and ended at 2:58 am.

Patrick Sartz, a Dusk to Dawn veteran ran the furthest going 18 miles. Brian Fleming was second in 16.1 miles.

GFRA to have Duel in the Dirt this weekend

FAIRBANKS-The Greater Fairbanks Racing Association will have one of their marquee race dates this weekend. Tonight is day one of their Duel in the Dirt series.

There are $1,000 purses for each race class which include: modified, sprint, legends, sportsman, late models, dollar and mini stock. There will also be sprint time trials Friday and Saturday at 5 pm.

Going into this weekend Scott Sluka is the only leader of his class with breathing room. Sluke leads the modifieds with 296 points and is 30 ahead.

North Pole's Brad Oleson eyes second basketball title in Spain

FAIRBANKS-One Interior native is making his fourth appearance in a Spanish basketball league final. Brad Oleson, who was born in Fairbanks and grew up in North Pole, is playing in the ACB Finals for Barcelona's FCB Regal. They will play Real Madrid for the third straight time for the crown.

Today was game one of the ACB Finals and Oleson contributed five points as Barcelona took game one 98-93. Oleson won a title with Caja Laboral in 2010.

Oleson is a UAF Hall of Famer and has his number retired from Patriots. He even has own day in his honor in North Pole, April 16.

Nanook Rifle team releases 2014-2015 schedule

FAIRBANKS-For just the second time in program history the Alaska Nanooks rifle team will host the 2015 NCAA Rifle Championships. The UAF Patty Center will be the location for the nation's championships next March but what else is on the rifle schedule?

The year starts with a match against UT Martin in the EF Horton Rifle Range on October 11. Their first Patriot Rifle Conference matches are in Texas as UAF takes on UTEP and TCU the following week.

54th Yukon 800 riverboat race is Saturday

FAIRBANKS-Fairbanks will definitely be the place to be this weekend and hopefully the weather gets better. Not only is the Midnight Sun Run and Midnight Sun Baseball game on the same night but Saturday morning is the start of the Yukon 800.

What's been called the world's toughest riverboat race will be in its 54th year on Saturday. Pike's Landing will have the ceremonial start at 11 a.m.

This year's purse could be anywhere from $22,000 to $30,000 which would be a record. The 2013 purse was $15,000.

Hawkins is named West Valley wrestling head coach

FAIRBANKS-A former coach steps back onto the mat to be the head coach of a program he was once a part of. West Valley's new wrestling head coach is Bob Hawkins.

Hawkins, age 67, was an assistant for Lathrop and West Valley in the 90s. He was also a head coach for the Eielson Ravens in the late 80s and early 90s.

He wrestled for Oregon State University in the late 60s and was fifth in the nation in the 137 pound class which include the great wrestler Dan Gable.

Former Team USA World Cup player is in Fairbanks for soccer camp

FAIRBANKS-Fairbanks is most definitely a hockey town and that's evident with Hockey Week in Fairbanks. Well the Eclipse Soccer Club is having Soccer Week in Fairbanks and one of the headliners is a former US World Cup Team player.

US Soccer Hall of Famer Bruce Murray is in Fairbanks this week for the Eclipse Soccer Clubs team camp. Murray is seventh all time in US Soccer International Goals with 21.

Goldpanners close out series with another double digit win

FAIRBANKS-Last night the Goldpanners bounced back from their first loss in the San Francisco Seals and closed out the five game series strong.

The Seals wanted to continue some winning ways from last night. Second baseman Jack Seaton spearheaded a double play to protect the Seals' 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third.

But Alaska's Jacob Hayes made the play of the night bottom of the fourth with two outs and two on and it's gone. Hayes hits his third homer of the year to give the Panners a 4-2 lead.
