Lathrop wins Railbelt title, North Pole rolls

FAIRBANKS-The Lathrop softball team wrapped up the Railbelt conference with a win last night.

The Malemutes rallied in this one after trailing 0-4 to Wasilla they answered with a seven spot in the third inning. Lathrop's Malyssa Gibson, a senior third baseman, led the charge going 3-3. Payge Scanlon-Boswood, Salena Maxwell and Cali Hoyos also went 2 for 3.

After regaining the lead Lathrop didn't allow anymore runs for Wasilla.

Trettel avenges last week's .1 loss at North Pole Speedway

NORTH POLE-Last night at the North Pole Speedway the Bandos and Legends cars got on the track for their third week of action.

In the Legends class Al Trettel in the 43 gets back on his horse after a close loss at the finish line last week. He wins Thursday night's main event. He has won two out of the three main events in the Legends class and becomes the points leader after coming in tied with Austin Cote.

Steven Hunter is the front runner in the Bandos class winning the first heat and main event on Thursday. He is the points leader with 911 points.

Weekend sports happenings

FAIRBANKS-Now here's what's going on this weekend in the Interior.

Saturday morning at 9 am is the Two-Way Torture Test. Two person teams run in opposite directions to complete the 13 mile race. The race starts at Pump House Restaurant.

Then high school softball and baseball season finales. For softball Palmer and West Valley will tango at 10 a.m. At 11:45 Monroe will face Lathrop. Palmer will face Eielson and Wasilla will play West Valley.

Lathrop girls lose first game of the year in state tourney opener

ANCHORAGE-Earlier today the Lathrop Malemute girls soccer team faced the Soldotna Stars today in their first game of the ASAA First National Bank Soccer State Championships. Both teams came in without a loss but someone had to lose.

The Lathrop defense and offense couldn't quite get it done as Sohi wins 3-0 over Lathrop.

The Stars struck first scoring twice at the 5th and 7th minute of the game.Kyle Wolfe and Olivia Conradi had the first half tallies for the Stars. Skylar Shaw put it away scoring at the 65 minute in the second.

UAF women's basketball adds two transfer guards

FAIRBANKS-The UAF women's basketball team announced that two junior college guards will be Nanooks in the fall. Head coach Cody Bench picked up two NWAACC All-Stars from Washington in Victoria Elleby and Arinesha Smith.

Elleby is a 5'-10" guard from Seattle transferring in from Highline Community Colleg. As a sophomore Elleby averaged 12 points, seven rebounds and 1.5 steals a game and was named First-Team All Western Region. She scored double digits in 21 of 22 games and has four double doubles. Elleby plans to major in political science.

Malemute softball and baseball teams get wins

FAIRBANKS-The Lathrop Malemutes continue to win games on the both diamonds. The Lathrop softball team defeated West Valley 5-1 to sweep their Railbelt conference foes this season.

Lathrop made cashed in on opportunities as all 5 of their runs were unearned. Kacey Duffield led the Malemutes with five strikeouts, two hits and three walks. Her counterpart, Zahn Thompson threw six strikeouts, walked seven batters and also allowed just two hits. But two wild pitches led to Lathrop runs.

For the baseball team Lathrop held on for 3-1 over North Pole in a MAC conference game.

Lathrop girls soccer team will face undefeated foe in state opener

FAIRBANKS-The ASAA First National Banks State Soccer tournament starts tomorrow and two Interior teams are in the field. The Lathrop girls soccer team and the West Valley boys. Ladies first.

Lathrop will face the Soldotna Stars, the Northern Lights Conference Champions. The Stars are also undefeated with a 15-0 overall record, 12-0 in the NLC.

The Lathrop Malemutes make their first appearance in the state tournament since 2007 after a 1-0 win over West Valley in what turned out to be the MAC title game. The Mutes finished the year 9-0-2 overall and 6-0-2 in the MAC.

Wolfpack have rematch against South in state soccer tourn. opener

FAIRBANKS-The West Valley boys soccer team will be the other Interior team in the state soccer tournament. The Wolfpack will face defending champion South in their opening game.

The South Anchorage Wolverines were second in the CIC this year and the Wolverines shutout West Valley 3-0 but that was back in late April. Since then West Valley finished 9-3-2 and 7-0-1 in the MAC conference winning their seventh region title in eight years.
