State health officials say there has been a spike in the number of Alaskans contracting sexually transmitted diseases this year. Officials have seen an increase of about 20 new cases each of HIV and syphilis in the first four months of 2014. This compares to 24 new cases of HIV and 30 cases of syphilis in all of 2013. The majority of those infected are men in Anchorage, but local health officials are also seeing increased numbers in Fairbanks. They say it's wise to be tested and get protection before engaging in risky behaviors.
