U.S. Senator Mark Begich is among more than 40 senators who have asked the postmaster general to extend the moratorium on closing U.S. postal facilities.
The current moratorium is scheduled to end May 15. When it was imposed in December, a U.S. Postal Service spokesman said it was intended to give Congress time to act on ``relief'' for the cash-strapped agency.
The Senate recently passed legislation that the lawmakers, in their letter, say will help the agency get on the ``road to financial stability.''
Five Alaska post offices remain on the list for possible closure.
