This afternoon, a small group of citizens, our borough mayor, Native leaders, and the entire Detective’s Division of the Fairbanks Police Department gathered downtown at Saint Matthews Church to remember homicide victims whose cases remain unsolved locally.
Thursday's march of remembrance took place on the nineteenth anniversary of the still-unsolved murder of 20-year-old University of Alaska Fairbanks student Sophie Sergie.
Sergie's body was found in a UAF dormitory on April 26th, 1993.
The student, who was taking the semester off, but was in town for appointments, was found sexually assaulted and shot to death.
Sergie's unsolved murder was just one of at least 33 local cases of its kind, dating back to the 1970s.
Reached for comment today, Leslie Hunter, Sr, Sophie Sergie's stepfather says he and her mother Elena continue to grieve, hoping for some kind of closure.
