After thirty three years Cynthia and Ken Henry are closing the local Hops Hallmark in the Shoppers Forum.
The Hops Hallmark store opened in 1979.
It soon became an anchor of the mall, which included a Lamonts department store, the Market Basket Grocery, and sixteen smaller stores.
Eventually the Shoppers Forum began to have more vacancies, and when Gottshalks Department store moved out, more businesses decided to leave.
The Henry's say the decision was based on retirement plans, but also feel the business climate is being affected by high utility costs that are making it an unprofitable situation.
"And so I am worried about Fairbanks.
I blame it on our cost of utilities, the high cost of electricity and heating fuel.
So, until that changes, I think that there will be businesses that look closely at their expenses, and may make a decision simular to ours."
