FAIRBANKS, Ak --The Alaska redistricting board is facing a hurdle in its plan to implement new zoning districts in the state meeting federal voting rights standards.
Lisa Handley, a consultant to the board, said in a written report that their current plan will likely not pass the US Justice Department’s preclearance stage.
The Alaska Supreme Court has ordered the board to devise a plan that focuses on meeting state constitutional requirements.
If that plan doesn't comply with federal law, the board would then move to its last resort, deviating from the constitution.
